Inter-House Transformation

Like other aspects of Queensland school sport, St Peters Sport Carnivals have had to adapt to a new normal. In Term 2, the Inter-House Cross Country was held in HPE classes to encourage social distancing and, most recently the Inter-House Track & Field carnival became a three-day event.  While different to what they’ve experienced before, from all accounts, it seems that students were just grateful to be able to participate—to get back in touch with their most anticipated aspects of College Life.

Track & Field, but make it COVID

Inter-House carnivals are known for their colour and atmosphere. This year, to ensure the carnival met all the COVID-19 restrictions, students were required to participate in their Year Level groups. Six sessions ran over three days, allowing our Years 7-12 students to battle in out, safely, on Mayer Oval. Despite cleaning practices and social distancing measures, the colour and the atmosphere remained—the new normal for Inter-House Track & Field still managed to capture that St Peters Spirit!

Sports and activities

In their House groups, students battled it out in the Long Jump pit, the Cricket nets, with Turbo Javelins, Hula Hoop Discus throws, Sprints, Relays and, a real crowd-favourite, Tug-of-War. Each session ended with a group war cry to boost College spirit and create a sense of competition between the Year Levels, despite them not being able to physically compete together.

Was it a success?

The undertaking (moving from a one-day carnival to a three-day, six session event) was no small feat. Everyone in the St Peters Sport department should be commended on their efforts in facilitating the new normal, as should the 2020 College Prefects. From assisting Sport staff with announcements, to directing the younger Year Levels at their various activity stations, the Prefects did an exceptional job in creating that iconic Inter-House spirit. The 2020 Track & Field carnival, while different, was a success—proof that, together, the St Peters community can achieve so much!

Congratulations to Gould - the 2020 Inter-House Track & Field Champions!

Gould took out the 2020 Inter-House Track & Field Carnival on an impressive 5249 points. The win was one for the history books, being the House's first trophy since 1997. Congratulations, Gould, and well done to everyone else who competed across the three days.
