Recently we had kerbside collection in our suburb, and all manner of things (and I do mean all) were strewn in front of people’s houses and apartment blocks. It’s always interesting to see what people put out to be collected, and what people salvage. Items discarded by some as rubbish are collected by others as treasure. So what’s important to you, and what do you consider precious?
Sometimes we think precious means something expensive or rare, but often the most precious things are not things at all. Love is precious, safety is precious, hope is precious, education is precious.
This coming weekend, on Saturday 8 August, students and staff from St Peters will be joining the annual Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) Walk My Way event, starting at QUT Gardens Point, and walking through South Bank. Two years ago we supported children impacted by the war in Ukraine, and last year we supported children all around the world whose lives were upended by conflict. This year, we are walking to raise awareness and funds to protect young girls from child marriage by providing access to education.
In our Chapels, we have heard the stories of Isaro and Angeline. Both girls live in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya with their families. Isaro dreams of becoming a policewoman, and Angeline dreams of becoming a doctor. For both of them, education is something that is precious and gives them hope for a better future. $100 helps to provide education, a school uniform and meals for girls like Isaro and Angeline. $450 is enough to train a refugee to be a teacher in the refugee camp, so that girls like Isaro and Angeline can stay in school and keep learning.
Psalm 72 says of God, “He will be kind to the weak and poor… their lives are precious to him.” God sees and loves the children in the Kakuma refugee camp, and we are called to love them too. We are called to love our neighbours — those who live around us, who we play with, learn with and work with, but also those who are far away, whose lives may be very different from ours. Service Learning at St Peters is all about being other-centred and seeking justice for others, both near and far.
You are very welcome to walk with us on Saturday, and can register and join the St Peters team or donate to our fundraising efforts here.
The Social Justice students will be meeting at the Subway at QUT Gardens Point at 12:45pm on Saturday, so if you’d like to walk with the group, you can meet us there.
For our Primary students, we will be holding a walk for Lower Primary on Tuesday lunchtime 11 August, and for Upper Primary we will have a walk at lunchtime on Tuesday 18 August. Fundraising and donations for both of these walks can be done through our St Peters fundraising page linked above.
Thank you, Lord, for showing us your heart for humanity, and for reminding us that everyone is precious, no matter where they are or what they do. They are important to you, so they are important to us too. Amen.

Our Social Justice Committee is proudly taking part in Walk My Way Brisbane on Saturday 8 August, walking in solidarity with refugee girls in Kenya and Somalia who are at risk of child marriage due to poverty and limited opportunities.
In addition to completing the walk, we're raising funds to help girls stay in school. Education provides safety, dignity and hope, helping protect girls from early marriage, delaying early motherhood and creating opportunities for a brighter future.
Every contribution makes a difference. Just $100 can help one refugee girl remain in school, while funds raised also support teachers, safe learning environments and education costs.
We'd love your support. Whether you register to join the walk or make a donation, you'll be helping girls step up into a brighter future.

Student Voices for Change
What happens when young people refuse to accept injustice as "just the way things are"? That was the challenge put before 30 St Peters Social Justice Committee students as they joined students from ten other schools at the Amnesty International Inter-Schools Conference. Throughout the day, our students were inspired, challenged and empowered to recognise that meaningful change begins when ordinary people have the courage to speak up for those whose voices are too often unheard.
One of the conference's most thought-provoking messages centred on the danger of tolerating the intolerable, the idea that injustice continues when society accepts it rather than challenges it. Students also heard the harrowing yet deeply inspiring story of Kenyan migrant Moses Oburu, whose lived experience of hardship, resilience and hope left a lasting impact on everyone in the room.
In the afternoon workshop, students put compassion into action by writing conscience letters to the Attorney-General, advocating for changes to youth justice laws and raising concerns about youth incarceration rates. It was inspiring to see our students thoughtfully engage with complex issues and use their voices to advocate for justice and human dignity.
A highlight of the day was seeing our Social Justice Captains, Katie J and Jonny S, confidently address the student forum. They spoke passionately about how the strength of St Peters lies in its community — a community that encourages service, compassion and standing alongside others. Their words were thoughtful, authentic and a wonderful reflection of our College values.
Finally, we acknowledge the outstanding contribution of our 2026 Social Justice Captains: Kate C, Katie J, Jonny S and Emma A. Their leadership, professionalism and dedication have enriched the Social Justice program throughout the year.

Friendology
Supporting your child through the ups and downs of friendship.
Do you often find yourself at a loss for advice when your children come to you with their friendship issues? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and we’re here to help. URSTRONG and our Friendology Program provide simple but meaningful language and skills to open a dialogue with your children.
To access a wide range of resources and videos, parents are encouraged to explore the URSTRONG Friendology Parent Portal found here, where you can sign up for a free Parent Membership.
Together, by empowering our students with these lifelong skills, we can continue building a culture of kindness in the Primary Years and help every child experience the joy of healthy, feel-good friendships.
Working Together When Concerns Arise
A strong partnership between home and school is one of the greatest contributors to a child's success and wellbeing. While we hope every school experience is positive, we recognise that from time to time questions or concerns may arise.
When this happens, we encourage families to follow three simple steps:
Pause before posting. Please avoid discussing school concerns on class WhatsApp, WeChat or other parent social media groups. These platforms rarely provide the full picture and can unintentionally increase misunderstanding or anxiety.
Reach out with curiosity. Your child's classroom teacher is the best first point of contact. Approaching conversations with curiosity and an open mind allows us to gain a shared understanding of the situation.
Work together to find a solution. We value respectful, collaborative partnerships with families. By working together with a shared focus on your child's wellbeing and learning, we are best placed to achieve positive outcomes.
At St Peters, we are committed to listening, communicating openly and working alongside families to resolve concerns in a timely and constructive way. Together, we can model the respectful relationships, empathy and positive communication we seek to nurture in every student.

Year 7
The Year 7s attended a presentation by Shock Therapy Arts during their Year Level Assembly this week, which focused on bullying, the repercussions of taking revenge, and the long-term effects bullying can have on individuals. ‘The Apology’ was performed by two actors who play 18 different characters in total, without ever leaving the stage or changing costumes. The Year 7s found this entertaining, but the messaging was powerful and important. These messages will be reinforced in the coming weeks during Pastoral Care lessons.

Year 8
This week has been an eventful one for the Year 8 cohort. As we approach the middle of the term, it is important for students to stay focused on upcoming assessments. During Pastoral Care, we spent time mapping out assessment schedules and establishing effective study goals and routines.
We have also launched our inter-form competition with a cookie challenge. Will 8J continue to hold onto their winning title?
Students were treated to a performance of The Apology by Shock Therapy, an outstanding production in which two actors portray 18 different characters. The performance delivered an important and meaningful message about the long-term effects of bullying.

St Peters Jazz Festival
Last weekend, St Peters proudly hosted the St Peters Jazz Festival, bringing together some of Australia's leading jazz musicians, educators and ensembles for a weekend celebrating the artistry, creativity and community of jazz.
The festival began with an outstanding series of masterclasses led by John Morrison, Jacki Cooper, members of Galapagos Duck, Mikael Strand, Dr Kent Windress, Josh Hatcher, Malcolm Wood and Ingrid James. Students gained invaluable insights into jazz performance, improvisation and musicianship from some of the country's most respected artists.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning were devoted to ensemble workshops, providing students with the unique opportunity to work closely alongside our guest musicians. These highly interactive sessions fostered meaningful musical collaboration, with students receiving expert guidance while developing their ensemble skills, confidence and understanding of jazz performance.
The festival closed with a spectacular concert featuring The Mark Pradella Band, Trichotomy, Galapagos Duck, The Late Shift Big Band, the JMI Jazz Orchestra, and the Brisbane Jazz Orchestra featuring Ingrid James. Audiences were treated to a showcase of exceptional musicianship, outstanding improvisation and the vibrant energy that makes jazz so compelling. A special guest appearance by Jacki Cooper and John Morrison provided a fitting finale to an unforgettable weekend of music-making.
Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the festival. We are especially grateful to our guest artists, staff, volunteers and the many students whose enthusiasm and commitment contributed to the success of this wonderful event. We look forward to continuing this exciting tradition in the years ahead.

Festival of Australian Music – Congratulations St Peters Chorale
On Saturday 1 August, St Peters Chorale performed in the Festival Gala Concert, which brought the Festival of Australian Music to a memorable close. The choir presented a polished programme of four works by Australian composers, including Joseph Twist's On the Night Train. Following the performance, Joseph Twist, who had been in the audience, congratulated Chorale on its beautiful performance.
The Gala Concert concluded with a spectacular Massed Festival Choir of more than 200 singers performing three Australian choral classics: Past Life Melodies by Sarah Hopkins, Kungala by Stephen Leek and High Places, also by Stephen Leek. The Festival was a fitting celebration of the breadth, strength and vitality of Australian choral music, and provided Chorale with an inspiring opportunity to perform alongside leading Australian choirs and hear a diversity of works by Australian composers.

Anahira M (Year 11) – Commonwealth Games
The St Peters community proudly congratulates Anahira M (Year 11) on her exceptional achievement representing Fiji at the recent 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Competing against some of the Commonwealth’s best swimmers, Anahira delivered a series of outstanding performances and proudly showcased both her talent and determination on the international stage. Her campaign was highlighted by a remarkable achievement in the Women's 50m Butterfly, where she broke the Fiji Open Women's National Record twice in the same day.
Anahira first set a new national record of 27.09 seconds during the heats, a personal best performance that secured her place in the semi-finals. She then bettered her own record just hours later, swimming 27.01 seconds in the semi-final to establish a new Fiji national benchmark.
These outstanding results were among Team Fiji's highlights in the swimming competition and demonstrate Anahira's continued growth as an athlete on the international stage. At just 16 years of age, her performances reflect the commitment, discipline and resilience that have become hallmarks of her sporting journey. The entire school community celebrates Anahira's success and looks forward to following her continued achievements in the pool.

QGSSSA Winter Fixtures – Netball, Volleyball, Hockey & Tennis
All results and ladder positions can be found on the QGSSSA website. Please check the St Peters App for fixture times and locations for this week’s away games against Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
Congratulations, girls, on another fantastic Saturday morning of fixtures, with every one of our teams coming away with a win! While the results were outstanding, what made us even prouder was the sportsmanship displayed by all our players throughout the morning. The opposition team commented on what a wonderful group of girls they were privileged to play against, which is a true reflection of your character, respect, and team spirit both on and off the court.
A huge thank you must also go to our parents for their ongoing support and commitment in getting the girls to these away fixtures. Your encouragement from the sidelines and willingness to travel make these opportunities possible, and we are incredibly grateful.
Well done, girls — keep up the great work and continue representing our school with pride!
Round 3 vs CC (Focus Round)
Round 3 brought a tough challenge against a very strong Clayfield College side, pushing all of our teams to raise their game and compete at their very best. While our Opens and youngest team were defeated this week, every other team rose to the occasion and secured fantastic wins!
Congratulations to all our players for once again demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship, determination, and a true never-give-up attitude. We are incredibly proud of the way you represented the school both on and off the court!

QISSN Netball
During the Term 2 holidays, St Peters proudly competed in the 2026 QISSN Netball Tournament at Nissan Arena.
QISSN (Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball) is Australia's largest annual netball carnival, bringing together more than 1,500 students from independent and Catholic schools across Queensland. The tournament provides an outstanding opportunity for students to compete at a high level, further develop their skills, and represent their school with pride.
This year's tournament was particularly significant for St Peters, as we were finally accepted into the competition after being on the waitlist for more than a decade. It was a fantastic milestone for our netball program, and our players made the most of the opportunity.
Competing against 100 teams from across Queensland, St Peters finished in an impressive equal 15th place, an outstanding achievement in our debut appearance. We extend our thanks to our Netball Parent Support Group for generously contributing towards the tournament nomination fees and making this opportunity possible for our students.
A special congratulations to Evie Y (Year 11), who was selected in the 2026 QISSN Rising Stars Team in recognition of her exceptional performances throughout the tournament.

Macy G (Year 11) – Beach Volleyball
Macy G travelled to Los Angeles, USA, during the July holidays and competed in three major Beach Volleyball Clubs of America (BVCA) events:
BVCA Pairs West Coast Championships (29–30 June) at Huntington Beach
2026/27 BVCA Orange County Summer Club Challenge (1–2 July) at Huntington Beach (Bronze Medallist)
BVCA Individual Pairs National Championships (7–9 July) at Hermosa Beach
Beyond competition, Macy was fortunate to immerse herself in the elite volleyball environment. Meets will begin in Week 7 with our first meet on 27 August being the Focus Meet, where all students wishing to compete for a spot in the AIC Team will need to attend. This event will take priority over other sports training sessions, and coordinators have been made aware of your absence.
Basketball
It was fantastic to officially launch our AIC Basketball season at last week's Focus Round. The atmosphere at our senior venue was outstanding, with the gym transformed into a vibrant home-court environment that provided a great stage for our teams to compete. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped create such an enjoyable evening for our players and supporters. A special acknowledgement goes to Henrik and Chris, our AIC Basketball Captains, whose leadership in organising the event and coordinating the halftime activities played a significant role in making the evening such a success.
Alongside, the Basketball Support Group and First V parent volunteers who assisted with the barbecue throughout the day. Despite some early challenges with the equipment, the team worked tirelessly to keep our community well fed and ensured everything ran smoothly for the large crowd supporting our final match of the day.
This weekend's fixtures are at Iona for Seniors, with the Juniors looking forward to a run of home games after playing away since the start of the term.
Home Game Scoring Duty
Players allocated scoring duty are expected to fulfil this responsibility.

Concussion Awareness
As we commence the Term 3 AIC season, I would like to share some important information regarding injury management, return-to-sport procedures, and concussion awareness. These processes are in place to support student safety and to ensure clear communication between the school, families, and medical professionals. All injuries or incidents that occur during training or matches are managed in line with the College’s risk management procedures. Where required, injuries are documented and followed up by the school and Sports Medicine staff.
Concussion identification and management are a priority across all AIC sports. To assist parents in recognising the signs and symptoms of concussion, we strongly encourage you to view the following Australian Sports Concussion Identification video:
This short video provides practical guidance on what to look for and what steps to take if you have concerns about your child following a sporting event.
If a concussion or suspected concussion occurs during school sport, the College will follow its concussion management protocol and communicate directly with families regarding next steps.
