Q: What was the most memorable part of your time at St Peters?
For many of us, probably most of us post 1976 (there is no official survey) we
unhesitatingly say: “Ironbark!”.
What is it about the Ironbark experience that makes it such a totemic part of the St Peters journey? Those who’ve been there, know.
It is a place of adventure, of self-discovery, of comradeship and quiet reflection. To quote Monique Beedles (1987-91): “We went there as children and came back as young adults, ready to face the world.”
At SPOSA Week last month – we celebrated 50 years of Ironbark. For those of us fortunate to have had time at Ironbark – it was an opportunity to reflect and be thankful for the privilege. Thankful for the vision of the teachers who conceived the idea, for the support of the school administration who got behind it, and for the pioneers who set it up. Thankful also for the generosity of Pastor Dahl and the Dahl family who gifted the land, near Crows Nest, to the school. Thanks to that vision, generosity and cooperative spirit of 'can-do', generations of us have benefited from the Ironbark effect at a formative stage in our young lives.
At this year’s Founders Day Service in the PAC Auditorium, I was fortunate to be sitting with Pastor Reini Mayer (1949-50), one of our living treasures. Pastor Mayer explained that at the time prior to the founding of Ironbark – the school had an option to buy land at Spicers Gap, a spectacular location if you don’t know it; which makes you wonder what might have been!
As it turned out, the donation of land to the school at Crows Nest took our destiny there instead. A fork in the road moment, that took us down a path born out of a generous act. Fifty years of good Ironbark things came from that moment. Pastor Dahl embracing the words of St Francis of Assisi: “For it is in giving, that we receive”. Now, it is up to us, we who have benefited from Ironbark and from our time at St Peters, to reach back and help the others who follow behind us. That is part of the spirit of St Peters, because after all, we are – Saints for Life!
Kind regards, Llewellyn Jones (1983) St Peters Old Scholars Association President

Founders' Day - Celebrating 79 Years
The annual Founders’ Day celebrations brought Old Scholars together during an inspiring College Assembly which included St Peters Chorale and Soloists. Morning tea followed for the Old Scholars and special guests.
This year we celebrated 79 years of St Peters Lutheran College and 50 years of Ironbark at our annual Founders’ Day Assembly. Years 5,7 and 12 joined special guests and Old Scholars in the Dron Auditorium, while the service was live streamed to the rest of the College.
Head of College, Tim Kotzur, spoke about the dedication of the College founders, describing the establishment of St Peters as an act of faith, courage, vision, and innovation. He also acknowledged Pastor Maurice Fielke and the pioneers of Ironbark in creating an Outdoor Education program that has become a unique and pivotal part of a St Peters education.
Guest speaker and our Primary Years Teacher Librarian, Megan Daley, an Old Scholar from 1993 shared her fondest memories of her time as a student and urged the current students to notice and value their classmates and to collect the stories of St Peters and of their teachers and peers, as these stories will 'add enormous richness' to their lives.
Thank you to all the Old Scholars (from peer years 1940s through to 1990s) who joined us for the service, to Chaplains Robbie Cave and Kirsten Munchberg for sharing the beautiful poems written by past St Peters students. Thanks were given to our founders who worked hard to turn a vision into the wonderful College that we are a part of today.
Lower Primary Library Activities
SPOSA-themed activities were held in the Lower Primary Library with Megan Daley (1993) who led a fun and engaging arts and craft session. Students had the opportunity to explore the rich history of St Peters by creating a vibrant collage of colourful images of themselves as present-day St Peters students and what they love about the College which was placed alongside images of students from the past, resulting in a unique and imaginative timeline.

Wine and Cheese Night
To wrap up a wonderful week, a wine and cheese night for Old Scholars who are current parents was held in the Centre for Learning and Innovation. It was wonderful to see over 40 parents from the 1980s to the 1990s join us for a night of reminiscing and reconnecting.
Head of College, Tim Kotzur, warmly welcomed guests and then led a tour through the CLI. Rob Barber, Vice President of SPOSA, shared his experiences as an Old Scholar who now has children attending the College. The St Peters String Quartet’s live performance created a wonderful backdrop for the evening.

Ross Roy and SPOSA Archive Tours
SPOSA Archives Tours
The SPOSA Office came alive just before the Easter break as over 70 Year 2 students took an exciting journey through time, exploring some historical treasures from our archives. Two Old Scholars, Karel Baum (1976) and Julie Ross (1969), generously shared their memories of their time at St Peters. St Peters teacher and Old Scholar, Mrs Sunny Kim (2003), challenged students to find her photos in past issues of Plus Ultra magazine – a task they completed with great enthusiasm. Miles W from 2C also proudly identified a photo of his grandfather and former St Peters Head of College, Adrian Wiles.Thank you to Karel and Julie for imparting such precious memories to our students. Their visit was truly special, creating unforgettable connections between the past and the present.
Ross Roy Tours
Our Term 1 tours of Ross Roy kicked off again with the Year 2 and Year 7 students visiting the building as part of their ‘Where we are in place and time’ Unit of Inquiry and Christian Studies. Ross Roy’s hallways were abuzz with chatter and excitement as they explored the building, learning about interesting artifacts and the historical significance of each room, then finishing off with meeting the Head of College, Mr Kotzur, in his office. SPOSA and the College love these regular visits from the students as it’s a wonderful way to connect with our past.
Reunion News
Ironbark Celebrates 50 Years!
Ironbark, St Peters' iconic Outdoor Education Program turned 50 over the weekend of 6-7 April.
This milestone marked half a century since the inception of a program that has left a profound impact on countless current students and Old Scholars. The Pilot program ran from April to June in 1974 and 34 Year 10 students were selected to take part in this bold experiment.
Fifteen of the original 1974 pilot students returned for a special reunion weekend along with two of the original founders Barry Jahnke, and Reverend Maurice Fielke together with Reverend Wendell Dahl who donated 73 acres of land to the College in 1971.
The weekend was packed with activities beginning on Saturday, with a warm welcome from Tim Kotzur, Head of College and Matthew Sullivan, Director of Ironbark, to the returning Old Scholars. Notably, Peter Frerichs, who travelled from the US joined the gathering as his visit back to Australia coincided with the event.
Barry Jahnke shared insights into the program's history, sparking nostalgic conversations over photos and videos while Matthew provided an update on the current program. On Sunday morning, they enjoyed a hearty breakfast together before Maurie Fielke led church and stories. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to reconnect, reminisce and appreciate the journey and impact of this remarkable program.
To all those who were instrumental in pioneering this program, your courage, enthusiasm, and dedication paved the way for the thriving Ironbark program we see today.

Class of 1979 – 45th Reunion Celebrations
In March, Mount Barney Lodge experienced an unexpected influx. Spread out across the premises – from houses and huts to tents, vans and Kombis were 40 St Peters Old Scholars from the Class of 1979, along with their partners. They gathered to celebrate their 45th graduation anniversary. The reunion was filled with activities such as yoga, games, walks, conversations, dining, and merry making. To top it off there was a singalong featuring songs from our Year 8 classes! A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the weekend such a fantastic event.

Amazing Achievements to Celebrate
Izzy Gardener (2017) Izzy Gardener continues to make waves in the communications
industry. Recently, she was recognised as the Best New PR Talent of the Year category at Mumbrella’s 2024 CommsCon Awards. This prestigious accolade celebrates individuals with less than three years of experience in both in-house and agency side PR and communications who exhibit remarkable talent and promise.
Izzy, now serving as the Consumer Public Relations Manager for ANZ, has demonstrated her exceptional abilities through various endeavours, including spearheading PR strategies, reviving a registered charity, and orchestrating the ANZ Rally. Reflecting on her achievements, Izzy commented “It’s been a huge year – from stepping into my new role as Consumer Public Relations Manager, ANZ, to building our PR strategy, relaunching our registered charity, working on our upcoming ANZ Rally and everything in between! While pulling together my portfolio for the submission, I had a few ‘wow we really did that’ moments.”
Her journey exemplifies dedication, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in the ever-evolving area of communications.
Brynlea Gibson (2018)
SPOSA is excited to announce that St Peters Old Scholar and UQ Psychology PhD candidate, Brynlea Gibson (2018) was recently recognised as a 2024 Westpac Future Leader.

The Westpac Future Leaders Award, nurtures visionaries like Brynlea, providing vital support for postgraduate studies in areas spanning sustainability, technology, social change and Australia's relationship with Asia. Brynlea's journey demonstrates the power of individual initiative and collective investment in shaping a brighter future for Australia. SPOSA extends our heartfelt congratulations to Brynlea and eagerly anticipate the impact of her groundbreaking work in the field.
St Peters Old Scholars Smashing Track and Field Records
The legacy of our College is defined by the remarkable achievements of our Old Scholars who continue to excel in their respective fields. This time it is in track and field where our Old Scholars are pushing boundaries and setting new standards of excellence.
Congratulations to Torrie Lewis (2022), now Australia’s fastest female sprinter. The sprint sensation who made history recently by overcoming the world 100-metre champion and one of her sports idols, Sha’Carri Richardson, in the 200-metre run at the first Diamond League event of the season in Xiamen, China. She won the race with a time of 22.96 seconds, the second fastest 200m time of her career.
Well done also to Old Scholar Gabby Schmidt (2023) who recently won the Australian Cross Country Trials and represented Australia at the World Under 20 Cross Country Championship in Belgrade, Serbia on 30 March. Gabby ran a 1500m race producing a world qualifier time for track and field and is now the second fastest qualifier in that race.
Additional Old Scholars, all from 2023,
who performed incredibly well at the under-20 World Athletics championships are Toby Stolberg who jumped a world qualifier and a personal best of 1.83 meters placing her
as second qualifier for high jump, and Ethan Forbes (2022) who won the Open Men’s 800m for the second year in a row.
The Beehive – By Megan Daley (1993)
Earlier this term, Lower Primary Teacher Librarian, Megan
Daley (1993) launched her debut children's picture book "The Beehive". Illustrated by Max Hamilton and published by Walker Books, this book celebrates Australian native bees, the unsung heroes of pollination. The engaging and informative narrative follows Willow, who is eagerly awaiting a special day at her school: hive day. On this day, the school's groundskeeper, Tom, will divide the native stingless beehive, allowing Willow to take home her own hive. Woven into the storyline are fascinating facts about Australian native bees and practical tips on hive care. Congratulations on the book Megan. SPOSA is very proud of your achievements and wishes you all the best.
Nicholas Hargreaves (2021) - Debuts in producing a Musical
Nicholas Hargreaves (2021) was Arts Captain in his senior year and heavily involved in the Music and Drama programs at the College.
During Year 12, Nick managed to squeeze in time to create his own full-length musical, Mayhem in June. He took on the challenge of writing
the script, composing the music, and crafting the lyrics all by himself – quite a feat for anyone, let alone a high school student.
Last year, Nick submitted his work to the Queensland Government for support from the Regional Arts Development Fund. Out of hundreds of applicants, he was chosen as one of only three recipients, a remarkable achievement!
Mayhem in June will be staged from 3–4 May at Crete Street Theatre in Beenleigh, and he’d appreciate seeing some supportive faces in the audience.
The St Peters Girls Opens vs Old Scholar Football match was a nail-biter! The game ended in a thrilling three-all draw, pushing it into overtime and finally to a penalty shootout to determine the champions. In the end, the Opens Team clinched the Fady Ibrahim Cup with a 4-2 score!
Congratulations to St Peters Opens Team on their victory and to both teams on a fantastic match. A special thank you to the Old Scholars who took part – it was wonderful to have you back at the College.
Girls Basketball Opens vs Old Scholars It was an epic showdown as the 2024 Girls Basketball Opens team took on the formidable Old Scholars on 24 March. The Old Scholars worked hard and came through victorious, winning 72 to 41. It was non-stop action and fantastic to watch the good-natured rivalry between the teams. At the end they all came together to celebrate over pizza, donated by SPOSA.
Thank you to Georgia Smith for organising the game and to all the Old Scholars from 2004 to 2020 for taking time out of their busy schedules to participate: Talitha Hoad (2017), Zoe Perkovic (2020), Lorna Shepherd (2011), Sigourney Thompson (2008), Marney George (2004), Tyla Stolberg (2017), Ashleigh Thompson (2010). Congratulations on the win and we hope to see you at the next Old Scholar game!

Where are they now?
Old Scholar Sigrid Thornton (1975): A Journey Through Passion and Performance
SPOSA chatted recently with our very own Sigrid Thornton, a renowned actress, as she reflected on her formative years at St Peters and successful career in a candid interview.
Sigrid's interest in theatre began when she was living in the UK with her family (between the age of seven to nine), where she learned the nuances of assimilation and the art of convincing performances. On returning to Australia, she attended acting workshops with Twelfth Night Theatre and continued these until she moved to Sydney to live, as back then this was THE city to be in to pursue a career in performance. When Sigrid began working professionally at age 13, Head of College at the time, Dr Carson Dron, allowed her to take time away from school to work sporadically in Melbourne and she garnered invaluable on-the-job training at Crawford Productions, all while navigating the challenges of balancing education and career demands.
Sigrid mentioned, “Looking back, I was very lucky to have his support for my aspirations. Being awarded the school drama prize at the end of my final year was another motivating achievement”.
Reflecting on her time at St Peters, she acknowledges “St Peters encouraged me to follow my passion. I have a vague memory of our wonderful history teacher the late Michael Selleck, while commiserating with me over a bad test result, saying something like ‘You’ll be fine. I think you already know your vocation’. That always stayed with me”.
In 1982 Sigrid's career trajectory took a monumental turn and the Australian cinema landscape changed forever when The Man from Snowy River, inspired by the Banjo Patterson poem, captured the hearts of the nation and the world - an experience she describes as both extraordinary and rewarding.
She revisited the film together with her original co-star Tom Burlinson and its timeless score, with audiences across generations in a recent show to celebrate its 40th anniversary, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 54-piece Southern Cross Symphony performed the award-winning score by Bruce Rowland live to screen while Sigrid and Tom gave audiences an insight into the making of the film and discussing why it remains close to their hearts.
Sigrid is reminded of the profound impact the movie had on her. “It changed the course of my life in many ways. It’s a gift to have the opportunity to reflect on it with that context and to share it again with audiences from every generation. It’s also quite wonderful to revisit the brilliant score with a live symphony orchestra”.
In the wake of the film's new iteration and success, there will be a return season of The Man from Snowy River Live in Concert, to Melbourne on the horizon. Sigrid is looking ahead to her own new projects and creative ventures with a slate of exciting endeavours in development.
Sigrid's journey continues to evolve, propelled by her unwavering dedication to the craft and an enduring passion for storytelling and we are extremely proud and wish her all the best with her incredible career.

Call for Information - Early Days – A Living History (1950 – 1960) Books 2 and 3
Nicky Boynton Bricknell (1960) is currently working on the creation of books two and three of 'Early Days – a Living History.'
Nicky is reaching out to all former students and staff who were part of
the St Peters community between 1950 and 1960. Whether you're an Old Scholar, past staff member, or have connections to individuals from that era such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or friends of friends, Nicky is eager to gather profiles and memories to enrich the historical narrative. Additionally, Nicky is on the lookout for any photographs from this period, particularly professional class or team photos.
Of particular interest is determining the inception date of the boys' blue with maroon summer shirt, a distinctive part of the school's attire. While the official uniform was established in 1950, the introduction of the blue uniform occurred later, and Nicky is keen to pinpoint this milestone in the school's history.
If you possess any information or resources that could contribute to this project, please don't hesitate to reach out to:
Your assistance will greatly enhance the depth and authenticity of 'Early Days – a Living History.'

He married and later divorced and has 2 lovely girls, both now in their mid-30's. We scattered his ashes into the ocean at Palm Beach, a favourite place for Tony and his 2 girls when they were kids. He was an avid sportsman who loved playing golf. He also loved rugby union, rugby league, AFL and all motor sports. Tony worked in the hospitality industry for most of his life managing hotels for the XXXX chain and later private hoteliers in both Qld and NSW. He later worked in commercial cleaning managing teams who cleaned kitchens in major hotels and restaurants. A true gentleman who is sorely missed by family and friends. Chris Walter (Tony's brother)
