Australian Youth Climate Coalition

Last Tuesday, the Environment Committee and other service learning groups were involved in an action workshop facilitated by representatives of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), an organisation that aims to promote climate change awareness and action, in school students around Australia.

We discussed how students can have a voice in issues around Climate Change Justice. We learnt that the indigenous peoples and farmers of developing countries of the world are at the greatest disadvantage when it comes to the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, drought and extreme weather events; yet, it is the developed countries that contribute the most to the rise in global temperatures through their emissions of carbon dioxide and methane.

As students, we can have an impact by reducing energy consumption in our homes and schools, and promoting awareness of clean energy choices; even just walking and riding, or taking public transport. We hope to work more with AYCC in our Environment Committee projects in 2019.
