The school year is rapidly drawing to a close. Over the last couple of weeks, we have been holding end-of-year celebration ceremonies to recognise many of our students' outstanding achievements. The depth, breadth, and diversity of student achievement at St Peters continues to stand out. It has been wonderful to see students achieving highly across an array of endeavours and not just in one field. It is refreshing to see students recognised for multiple aspects of College life, be it academics, sport, music, the arts, or community service. The value and importance of a holistic education that St Peters offers to develop the whole child was most evident at these award ceremonies. A St Peters education is very much about growing, shaping, and forming our students in their learning, purpose, character, and values.

A big thank you to the College’s teachers and staff for their unstinting efforts to do their best by our students. To our College families, on behalf of St Peters, thank you for your support. To the many parents and carers who volunteer in various ways across the College, thank you for enriching the community life of St Peters. A wise old headmaster once told me that 'good families help make good schools'. St Peters is certainly blessed with good families.

I wish all members of our community a blessed Christmas and restful break when the time comes, and look forward to welcoming our students back in January 2026, for another year of learning, growth, and discovery.

3I/Atlas, classified by NASA as a comet with unusual features, is visiting our solar system. It is certainly capturing the imagination of many people and stimulating much debate.

Two thousand years ago, something spectacular was happening in the heavens that drew Magi from the East towards Jerusalem.

As we draw closer to Christmas and the end of term, it would be good to focus on the Magi who visited the baby Jesus. You can read the story in the Gospel of Matthew 2:1–12.

Traditionally, these Magi are called the Three Wise Kings. The Bible does not give an exact number, or call them Kings; we only know they gave three costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the Christ child. Their names (Melchoir, Caspar, and Balthazar) appear in Western Christianity around the latter part of the second century.

They are men of mystery, and we only know they came from the East to Jerusalem seeking the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1–2).

Who were the Magi? Many interpreters hold that these wise men came from Babylon, and they may have, but we cannot be sure. Their study of the stars had led them to believe that a great leader had been born in Judea[1]. They followed a star and wished to worship this King.

1. Halley’s Comet 12–11 BC.
2. A planetary conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn 7 BC, representing the birth of a King. Jupiter the royal planet and Saturn thought to be representing the Westland.
3. A nova or supernova is the preferred theory of Johannes Kepler. Chinese astronomers recorded a nova for 70 days in 5/4 BC, a date shortly before the death of King Herod.

France concludes Matthew 2:9 describes not a regular astronomical occurrence but the miraculous provision of what appeared to be a star which uniquely moved and then stopped^[2].

We could call these three Magi 'Sincere Seekers'. Something drew them to another land, and they understood the signs of the times. All the clues were pointing to the birth of someone special. They were open-minded and prepared to leave home and seek out this new King. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him (Matthew 2:10–11).

Rev Dr John Sweetman comments: imagine Mary’s surprise when she opened the door of their one-room cottage in Bethlehem to see a group of dignified Persian philosophers and scientists dismounting from their camels. Imagine her wide-eyed wonder when they prostrated themselves before the toddler in her arms and honoured him with wonderful words of worship (2:11). Imagine her deep gratitude when they offered Jesus expensive gifts that could support her little family for many years.

Jesus is the reason for the season, so I encourage you over the holidays to channel your inner Magi and take some time to learn more about Jesus. Additionally, as Jesus said, it is better to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Let's look to bless those less fortunate than ourselves with gifts and donations.

Finally, I urge you to take some time to reflect on this old hymn. I recall singing it in my Year 7 school musical. Unfortunately, due to my lack of acting and singing ability, I was relegated to the role of Riza, a messenger to the three Kings.

You may have seen recent news about Australia’s upcoming Social Media Age Restrictions. From 10 December, new Australian laws will prevent anyone under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts on certain social media platforms. This includes Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, X (formerly Twitter) and others. For the full list, visit the eSafety Commissioner website.

What does this mean for YouTube at school?

Under these rules, students under 16 will no longer be allowed to sign in to a YouTube account. This is because logged-in users can upload videos and interact with others on the platform.

Can teachers still use YouTube as a learning tool?

Yes. YouTube remains a valuable educational resource. However, we will make some important changes to keep students safe and comply with the legislation.

• Teachers are encouraged, where possible, to play videos to the whole class rather than asking students to watch them individually. 
• Videos will be embedded in secure platforms such as Microsoft tools, Firefly, OneNote, or Toddle. This means students can view content without visiting YouTube or signing in.
• Students will be reminded not to use personal accounts to access YouTube.

What’s next?

We are:

• Updating teachers on safe and compliant YouTube use, as well as educating them on the Social Media Age Restrictions in general.
• Compiling resources to help families understand these changes.
• Discussing this with students in Assemblies and Year Level Meetings.

How parents can support their teen

• Start the conversation: Talk with empathy and curiosity about your child’s social media use and the reasons for the new laws. Emphasise that these changes are about protection, not punishment.
• Gradually phase out social media time: Instead of stopping suddenly, ease the transition to reduce negative feelings.
• Explore healthy alternatives: Encourage offline activities and other ways to stay connected.
• Review family tech habits: Check online safety settings and device routines. Consider a Family Tech Agreement.
• Stay firm but supportive: Explain why workarounds (like fake accounts or VPNs) are risky.
• Use parental controls wisely: Avoid early downloads of restricted apps and take advantage of family safety settings and tools available on most devices, such as parental controls.

Coping After the Restriction Begins  

When the restrictions take effect, your child may feel a sense of loss or frustration. Consider these strategies:  

• Archive memories: Assisting them in downloading or saving content before their accounts close.
• Reframe the change: Position it as a chance for a 'digital detox' and more real-world connections.

Support

If your child is finding the change difficult, remind them that support is available. The school counsellors are available now and when they return to school. They can reach out to Kids Helpline for confidential help anytime, and you can find resources to assist on the eSafety Commissioner website.

The farewelling of students leaving our community is always tinged with sadness. To the parents who trusted us with their children at St Peters, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. To families transitioning to new schools, we wish you the very best. May your children's educational journeys continue to flourish in their new environments, fostering growth and positivity.

As we approach the end of the year, we take this opportunity to acknowledge and farewell several valued members of our Primary Years team who are moving into new seasons of life and work. Each of these colleagues has contributed greatly to the warmth, professionalism, and spirit of St Peters, and we thank them sincerely for the impact they have had on our students and our community.

We farewell Keiran Noonan, who will be moving closer to home and stepping into a full-time HPE role. Keiran’s energy, positivity, and commitment to our youngest students are deeply appreciated, and we know he will continue to inspire young people in his new school.

Hannah Hart will be heading to St Peters Springfield to continue her teaching journey within our broader College community. We are grateful for her dedication and the strong relationships she has built with students and families in our Prep Centre, and we wish her every success as she shares her strengths with our Springfield community.

We also farewell Ros Grant, who is retiring after many years of service. Ros has contributed enormously to the fabric of our Early Years community, bringing care, dedication, and a deep love of learning to her work. We express our sincere gratitude for her exceptional service and wish her a restful and happy retirement.

After a wonderful career in education, Rosemary Meyers will be retiring. Rosemary has touched the lives of countless students and colleagues in Upper Primary through her gentle wisdom, warmth, and professionalism. We thank her wholeheartedly for her service and wish her a joyful, fulfilling retirement.

Ryan Wilkinson will be relocating to Geelong, taking his passion for teaching and pastoral care to a new community. Ryan’s commitment to our students and his steady support of his colleagues have been greatly valued, and we wish him the very best as he begins this new chapter.

Megan Daley has been appointed to an exciting national role — an achievement that reflects her expertise, creativity, and passion for literature and children’s learning. We congratulate Megan warmly and look forward to seeing the broader impact she will undoubtedly have across the country.

Christine Ivanov will be moving into a teaching role in early intervention, a field in which her skills, patience, and dedication will make a remarkable difference. We thank Christine for her contributions to our students and wish her every success in her meaningful new role.

We also wish Marg Wegenmyer, Sherrie Knipe, and Tania Car well as they each take periods of leave. We hope this time brings rest, renewal, and all that they need, and we look forward to welcoming them back in due course.

Social Media Age Restrictions

As we look ahead to 2026, I want to draw your attention again to the important national change that will affect all young people. From 10 December 2025, social media platforms will be required by law to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating or maintaining accounts. This reform aims to reduce exposure to online pressures and protect the wellbeing of children and adolescents by giving them more time to develop the digital and emotional skills required for safe and responsible use.

I encourage all families to use the holiday period to talk with their children about these changes and to set clear expectations at home. Further information from our eLearning Team is available in this week's The Rock newsletter and on Firefly.

Year 7 students are looking forward to the Future Anything workshops on Monday and Tuesday next week. A reminder that students may wear their HPE uniform on the day they attend. As we approach the end of the term, lockers are being gradually emptied, and students are encouraged to take home anything they no longer need. On the final day of term, we’ll celebrate with form class activities, enjoy the Future Anything Grand Final, and take part in the traditional final countdown to the holidays.

Year 8 students have spent this week focusing on studying for exams and preparing for speeches and interviews for assessment across a wide variety of classes. We have been able to celebrate their achievements as well through award ceremonies, including the Sports Awards evening, acknowledgements at the Junior High Assembly, and our Cocurricular Awards ceremony. A big congratulations to our Year 8 Male Sportsperson of the Year, Carter A, and our Year 8 Female Sportsperson, Juliana S. We would also like to congratulate our Year 8 Cultural Excellence Award winner, Coco L (pictured below playing at our Cocurricular Awards ceremony) for her outstanding achievements in Music and Visual Arts. We also acknowledge our Outstanding Service Awards winners from Year 8: Renee C, Kimmy C, Ada L, Joshua L, Elliot L, and Gabriella R, who have all contributed positively to support the College throughout the year. Congratulations to all students who have achieved fantastic results in their academic, sporting, cocurricular and music pursuits throughout the year.

We have finished the year off with a special guest performance by Seni, the Christian Rapper, during our last Year Level Assembly. Seni brought a special message for the Year 8s and some of our Year 9s, along with an upbeat and energetic performance to send us out for the year. Thank you to Miss George for organising this experience for some of our Junior High students.

The recent Junior High Free Dress Day was held to raise funds for the Emmanuel City Mission, an organisation that provides food and safe shelter to homeless and vulnerable people who visit the mission each day. The support of our Junior High students raised $ 1,400. This amount covered the cost of two days of lunches and enabled our Year 9 Leaders to visit the Mission in a volunteer support capacity. The visit was organised by Mrs Rankin, Director of Identity, Formation and Service.

The following report is from two of our Year 9 Student representatives who were involved in this important service initiative:

Over two days during Week 7, the Year 9 Student Leaders visited the Emmanuel City Mission homeless shelter in South Brisbane. The Mission is a sanctuary for those looking for a hot meal, a shower, or toiletries, and a loving, respectful environment where everyone is welcome. The centre is based on Christian values and behaviour, with everyone being treated with dignity and respect. We had the opportunity to visit and volunteer at this shelter to provide support to those in need.

Once we arrived, we were given a tour of the facility, which had a kitchen, in which hundreds of meals are prepared every day, an eating and lounge area, and even a private sleeping and bathing area, one for men and another for women. We learnt that Emmanuel City Mission is about creating a loving and safe community, which is why a church service is held every Sunday, attended by over 200 people. After seeing the great aspects of their facility, we then put on our aprons and gloves to begin preparing lunch.

While working in the kitchen, we learned how much organisation and teamwork go into preparing meals for such a large number of people. We helped with food prep, washing up, and serving meals, which revealed how the centre operates each day and how essential the volunteers are to keeping everything running smoothly. Being involved in these tasks continued to show us the scale of support required to meet the community’s needs and highlighted the importance of services like Emmanuel City Mission in providing consistent, reliable assistance to those experiencing hardship.

Overall, our visit to Emmanuel City Mission was an amazing opportunity to support people in our community. By assisting in the kitchen and serving meals, we were able to contribute positively to those visiting and see firsthand how our efforts supported those who rely on the centre each day. Being involved in preparing food and serving meals made the experience much more meaningful, as it showed us the importance of teamwork and organisation in community service. It was a great experience as it allowed us to step outside our usual environment and understand the positive impact that we can have on others.

Year 9 Student Representatives

On Wednesday, Christian rapper Seni performed for Year 8 and 9 students and our 2026 Boarding leaders. Seni opened with upbeat 'Directions' before lowering the tempo for his song 'White Flag' which was penned following his declaration of faith where he surrendered his life to Jesus. Seni then shared his testimony: a boy from Tonga, popular and talented, always seeking purpose in things and people, yet always finding his way into trouble and feelings of emptiness. On a visit to his family, he saw their passion for Jesus and was intrigued, so he started investigating and discovered the meaning of life, Jesus, and that the living water (John 4:10) Jesus offered to the woman at the well was the same spring of life he needed. Seni finished with 'Never Would Have Made It,' a rap declaring his love and thankfulness to Jesus for his forgiveness, grace, and the living water that wells up to eternal life (John 4:13). Seni’s music is available on Spotify under his rapper name, TYJ.

On Friday 14 November, the ten choirs of St Peters came together to celebrate the 2025 year in a wonderful evening of choral music. The annual Choral Finale Concert provided a special opportunity for all who sing in the program to perform for one another and to share the wide variety of repertoire they have explored throughout the year. For the sell-out audience, it offered an inspiring glimpse into the growth and development that occurs from the first steps of Poco Voce (Years 1–2) through to the accomplished artistry of St Peters Chorale and Chamber Chorale (Years 9–12).

A highlight of the Finale Concert is the chance to honour our graduating Year 12 students. This year, seventeen Year 12s were recognised for their leadership and longstanding commitment to the choral program. Many began their St Peters choral journey in Lower Primary, and their contribution to the culture and spirit of our choirs has been profound. Hearing them share reflections on their time in the program as they compered the evening added a heartfelt and personal dimension to the night. Looking fabulous in their formal attire, they were celebrated and farewelled with genuine pride and gratitude.

The concert concluded with all ten choirs, comprising more than 400 singers, joining on stage to perform 'Keep a Dream in Your Pocket' by The Seekers. Led by our Year 12s, this uplifting massed choir finale captured the essence of the evening: community, confidence, and the courage to carry our dreams forward.

A concert of this scale is only possible through the dedication of many people. Sincere thanks go to our student mentors, vocal tutors, accompanists, music administration staff, and classroom music teachers for their support across the year. Special thanks to my choral conducting colleagues — Ms Catherine Robertson, Mrs Jenny Flottmann, Ms Louise Baldwin, and Ms Kathryn Morton — for their outstanding work in guiding our young singers. We also extend our gratitude to Colin Bushell Photography for capturing such beautiful memories from the night.

The 2025 All Bands Finale Concert brought the St Peters Lutheran College community together for an inspiring evening of music, celebration, and reflection on a year of outstanding achievement. Featuring performances from every ensemble in the Band Program, the concert showcased the breadth of talent across Years 5–12 and highlighted the growth, dedication, and teamwork of our student musicians.

Throughout the evening, audiences enjoyed an exciting variety of repertoire, from dynamic concert band works to exciting percussion pieces and entertaining jazz standards, demonstrating the versatility and musical maturity developed throughout the year. Each ensemble took to the stage with confidence, delivering polished performances that reflected months of rehearsal and commitment.

The concert also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the many accomplishments of the Band Program in 2025, including festival appearances, community performances, and the ongoing success of our ensemble development initiatives. It was a fitting way to honour the leadership of our graduating senior musicians while welcoming the next generation of performers into the program.

A warm thank you is extended to our conductors, tutors, student leaders, and families for their support throughout 2025. The All Bands Finale Concert not only celebrated the end of another exceptional year of music-making at St Peters but also set the stage for an exciting year ahead.

The 2025 String Finale showcased the strength, depth, and community spirit of our Strings Program, highlighting the musical journey of students from Year 1 through to Year 12.

This year’s Side by Side theme brought our mentoring culture to the forefront. Each ensemble featured students performing alongside older role models, demonstrating the leadership, guidance, and teamwork that define the program. A particularly special moment was the Year 1 and Year 12 combined performance, which beautifully symbolised the full pathway available to our young musicians.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of warmth, support, and genuine celebration. Our Year 12 students delivered heartfelt and sincere reflections, offering insight into their personal growth, shared experiences, and the profound impact of music on their time at the College. Their words were a testament to the character, resilience, and maturity they have developed during their many years in the program.

St Peters extends its sincere thanks to our Strings staff for their tireless dedication and leadership. Their commitment to excellence was evident in every performance on stage.

The concert once again highlighted the exceptional standard of music-making at St Peters. Our ensembles performed with confidence, artistry, and a joyful sense of movement, reflecting both the hard work of our students and the strong culture of musical excellence within the College.

Thank you to our students, families, staff, and community for supporting this outstanding event. We congratulate all performers on a remarkable finale and look forward to another inspiring year of music at St Peters.

This year’s VAPAr event was a dynamic showcase of student talent across Art, Drama, Music, and Film. The Year 12 Art Finale, presented as a red-carpet event, offered thoughtful insights into well-devised lines of inquiry, reflecting the depth of students’ creative journeys. Drama performances transformed the studios with innovative lighting and minimalist sets, creating an immersive atmosphere for audiences.

Film Night featured an eclectic mix of genres produced in class, with students confidently introducing each category and sharing their creative processes. Canvas Madness added a vibrant splash of colour, as participants celebrated the Access Arts program through a collaborative one-hour watermelon painting session — a refreshing way to begin the VAPAr festivities and unwind before exams.

The Guitar Ensemble added a melodic touch, performing to an appreciative audience. Artworks, films, and Capture photography all competed for the People’s Choice Awards — congratulations to the winners!

BMJC Water Polo

This is the first season of Water Polo for the U12 team, and after four tough grading rounds in Division 2, they’ve fought hard to hold their place and truly proved themselves. Since grading, they’ve played three games, winning one, with one final match to go before the Christmas break.

The girls will be playing RiverCity at 4:00 pm at Stuartholme this weekend. We’d love to see you there supporting our St Peters U12 team!

Graceville Hounds

After ten fantastic weeks of competition, our inaugural season in the Graceville Hounds Girls Touch competition has come to a close. We are absolutely delighted with the growth, commitment, and teamwork shown by our players as they took on this new challenge. For many, it was their first taste of competitive Touch Football, and the improvement from Week 1 to the final round was remarkable. The girls represented St Peters with pride, energy, and great sportsmanship each Sunday afternoon. A huge thank you to Miss Buckby for her organisation and support throughout the season, and to our coaches who guided and encouraged the girls every week. We look forward to entering teams again next year and continuing to build this exciting pathway for girls’ sport at the college!

MSW Cricket

It has been another exciting term of Cricket. This term, we have placed several primary and secondary boys' and girls' teams in the MSW Cricket Competition. Students have attended training and match days with great excitement. It is so wonderful to see the girls committed to being part of our Cricket program! The boys have continued to show their dedication and commitment to building skills and a genuine love of the game. We have been blessed to have a number of quality coaches at Indooroopilly, including our new Head Coach, Jeremy Creighton, Lachlan Stevens (former Queensland Bulls representative) and Lily Bassingthwaighte (current WBBL Brisbane Heat player). The students are really building to something special. The program just gets stronger and stronger each year, thanks to Gary Munday and his passion for the St Peters Cricket program.

A big thank you to Mr Nick Brayne for all his total commitment to the Junior Program and the work he does at Springfield to make the program come together as joint campuses.

Some notable performances this season have been Archie F 3/1 (Sixers), Max F 38 runs (Sixers), Shrey M 40 runs (Stars), Jett R 4/7 (Stars), Lachlan L 43 not out (Panthers), Conor B 46 runs (Scorchers), and Manu K 2/8 (Scorchers).

There have also been a number of great team performances this season, showing St Peters’ strength in the MSW Cricket Competition. We would like to thank all the students, parents, and coaches for their involvement in St Peters Cricket. Their support has once again been amazing in growing our Cricket program. We wish everyone luck for the remaining two games of the season!

CELEBRATING PRIMARY SPORTING SUCCESS

This past week, a talented group of Year 6 boys took home the 12 Years Division 1 Touch premiership with the Graceville Hounds. While not an official school team, it was fantastic to see Hugh D, Lucas P, Matthew D and Zayden B proudly representing St Peters in community sport and coming home with the trophy. Well done, boys — congratulations on a brilliant achievement!

On behalf of the P&F Committee and Community Engagement Team, thank you to everyone who completed our survey earlier this year about the future of College events. We’re excited to share the key findings from your feedback.

Top 5 Insights from the Survey

1. Music events and Carols Under the Stars are favourites – highly valued for fostering community spirit and showcasing student talent.
2. Formal events need a refresh – the Ladies Lunch and Gala Ball were seen as costly and outdated in format.
3. Timing and accessibility are key factors in attendance – parents would like more weekend or hybrid options.
4. Strong demand for informal, family-friendly gatherings – think BBQs, movie nights, and cultural celebrations.
5. A professional speaker series is a priority – covering topics such as parenting, resilience, and technology use.

Strategic Recommendations

• Prioritise family-friendly events, such as BBQs, concerts, and cultural nights.
• Reimagine formal events to make them more affordable and engaging.

The St Peters P&F will host a textbook swap in the last week of school (Week 9). The aim is to reduce waste, help families manage the cost of new textbooks, and strengthen community connections.

Dates: Monday 1 December – Wednesday 3 December
Time: 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Venue: P&F Centre

How it works — Bring One, Take One

1. Bring textbooks you no longer need that appear on the 2026 book lists.
2. Hand them to the volunteers and receive a ticket.
3. Use a ticket to "pay" for any 2026 textbook you find and need.
