IB in Action: Sports, Exercise and Health Science
In Term 3, Year 11 Sports, Exercise and Health Science students studied a unit called 'Achieving PBs'. This unit focused on the theoretical principles that can be applied to help athletes improve their personal bests. Topics covered included the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, ATP and energy production, the immune system and sport, biomechanics, training programs, fatigue, and sports psychology. Throughout the unit, students participated in a range of practical activities designed to explore and apply the biomechanics component of the course.
One of the principles explored was Bernoulli's Principle, a physics concept that explains why planes and frisbees stay in the air, Formula 1 cars are pulled toward the ground, and sailing boats move forward. In the activity pictured with the balloons, students experimented with air speed and pressure differences to see the Bernoulli effect in action.
Students also investigated the principle of buoyancy. Using playdough, they experimented with creating objects that had a large enough surface area to offset water density and float, just as Archimedes discovered in his famous 'Eureka' moment. They then tested how varying fluid densities impacted an object’s ability to float (as seen in the floating egg experiments).
A big thank you to Mrs Lynne Rech, SEHS teacher, for designing engaging, hands-on learning experiences that reflect the inquiry, action, and reflection at the heart of the IB philosophy.

WORLD TEACHER’S DAY
Last Friday, Primary Years students had the chance to express their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional educators at St Peters.
The event was a beautiful reminder of the connections that define our school community, with students and educators alike uplifted by the expressions of appreciation. Thank you to our incredible teaching staff for your dedication, kindness, and unwavering support. Your influence leaves a lasting impression on every child.
NEW BLUE CARD LEGISLATION
Recent changes made by Blue Card Services now require all parent volunteers to hold a current Blue Card before assisting in classrooms, on excursions, camps, or in any other school-based activities.
What this means for you:
If you already hold a Blue Card, please ensure that it remains current. You will need to bring your Blue Card into the College office for us to sight as part of our compliance obligations.
If you do not yet have a Blue Card, you will need to apply before volunteering. The application process is free for volunteers and can be completed online through the Blue Card Services website.
Processing times can vary, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible if you are considering volunteering this term or in Term 1, 2026.
When applying, if you receive an alert saying that the organisation (St Peters Lutheran College) needs to let Blue Card Services know you are one of their volunteers, please send your Blue Card Services account number, full name and date of birth to peopleandculture@stpeters.qld.edu.au requesting they link you to the College.
Once you have your Blue Card, please bring it to the Primary Years office so we can verify it as part of our compliance obligations. Please do not simply send us your ID number from the website; we need to view your actual card.
A reminder that your Blue Card must be current and aligned with the completion of the 2025 Volunteer Induction.
We understand that this process adds an extra step, but we also know that it is an important part of safeguarding our children and ensuring our school remains a safe and nurturing environment.
If you have any questions, require assistance with the application process, or would like further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you again for your willingness to serve and for partnering with us in the care and education of our students.

Year 8 Update
The Year 8s have been working hard over the last fortnight on their assessment tasks and engaging in their learning. Many have been busy with cocurricular activities, such as the Year 8 and 9 AIC Touch Football tournament, held at Iona College on Saturday 25 October. The boys gave their all in the hot sun, and although they did not place where they wanted to, they represented St Peters with pride (team photo below).
We had a special visitor at the end of our Junior High Assembly on Wednesday 22 October. Adam Walsh from the Brisbane Broncos brought along the Provan-Summons Trophy, which was a big hit with students and staff alike, many of whom jumped at the chance to hold it and take a photo (including Head of Junior High, Mr Forbes). A big thank you to Adam and the Brisbane Broncos for such a memorable experience.

Year 11 IB and QCAA Visual Art students recently visited artist Simone Eisler at her farm near Kin Kin, for a day of immersive art-making in a rural setting. The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the natural environment as part of their creative process.
Working in and around Simone’s studio, students explored the landscape through photography, disparate object installation, bush brush painting, and collaborative construction. These activities encouraged them to respond to the textures, forms, and materials found on-site, using the environment as both subject and medium.
The authentic artist experience informs the Year 12 coursework, where students will develop inquiry questions and focus areas based on their reflections and research.
The day offered a mix of weather (light rain and sunshine), which added to the sensory experience of working outdoors. A sincere thank you to Simone and Kevin for hosting the students and generously sharing their time and expertise.

At St Peters, we’re proud to offer a wide range of activities that support student wellbeing, personal growth, and social connection. While we encourage participation, we also value balance. Unstructured play and downtime are equally important, as they help children recharge, build resilience, and develop independence.
We encourage families to take a balanced approach when selecting activities, ensuring students have the time and energy to engage meaningfully.
Our swimming season has well and truly kicked off with many primary students attending regular training and competitions.
The coaches have been pleased to welcome a number of new and familiar faces to our Friday morning junior swimming sessions in Term 4, in addition to SPW swim squads, which have been running throughout the year.
This past weekend, many of our Primary students represented SPW at the Brisbane Metropolitan Relay Championships. Our team returned with many top-10 finishes and many results to be proud of.
SPW Club Night races are held every Friday evening during Term 4, and the coaching team welcomes anyone interested in attending. These evenings are a fantastic introduction to competitive swimming in a low-pressure and fun environment.

AIC Minecraft Capture the Flag – Runner-Up
A team of students from Years 7 to 9 represented our College in the AIC Minecraft Capture the Flag competition, Senior Division. Despite being one of the youngest line-ups at the event, the team performed exceptionally well, finishing runners-up.
After a solid performance in the group stage, the team advanced to the quarter-finals, where they secured a strong win to move into the next round. The semi-final was a rematch against Villanova’s Senior Team, who had beaten them earlier in the competition. Adapting their strategy, the team switched from their usual aggressive style to a clever defensive approach, holding off multiple attacks and winning through a narrow frag tiebreaker — a thrilling game decided by less than five points.
In the Grand Final, the team faced Villanova’s Cadet Team in another close battle. Villanova’s side, expertly guided by their coach, took the win via tiebreaker.
Considering the team was assembled the day before the event, and missing several key players due to other commitments and injury, this result is a tremendous achievement. The students showed adaptability, teamwork, and determination — qualities that make us proud.
