A staff member and I have a saying: ‘Grief is a sticky thing.' It’s like that random piece of chewing gum that you step on in a public place that stubbornly sticks onto the sole of your shoe. It’s something that you can’t shake off easily; it takes time and care to try to remove it, and it has the potential to permanently mark a person’s soul.
Grief requires intentional support and care from others; it requires wisdom for the person undergoing it to work with it in a way that does not diminish the loss but can lead to growth and healing. Grief is a complex thing. But I like this image of grief being sticky because it reminds me that grief remains with us; it takes concentrated effort to acknowledge it, attend to it, and work with it. And significantly, working with grief takes the help of others. This tactile analogy of grief being sticky and near impossible to remove by ourselves comes from a specific prayer that I have used with various people at Indooroopilly this term. It comes from a prayer called a 'litany'.
In modern English, a 'litany' can mean a long list of unpleasant things. Grief is proof that, at times, we all have unpleasant experiences we must journey through in life. As indicated, grief and loss are continuing companions with us throughout our lives that can permanently mar our souls. Alternatively, they can be companions through life who accompany us for a limited time, as we learn from them and pass through them with the help of others and with the help of God. The wounds from grief can be long-lasting and detrimental to a person’s faith and trust in God. But the beautiful thing about the Christian faith is that we are given permission to name our grief and loss in lament. We can name our emotions and sadness in conversation and prayer to God. We can do this because Jesus knows what it is like to be in pain, to grieve and to suffer loss. On the cross at his death, he cried out to God his Father, "Why, why?". Lament is crying out with Jesus from the cross. It’s a prayer in pain that can lead to trust. Crying out our whys to God can tune your heart to the brokenness of the world and the unshakability of God’s goodness and hope.
As you read this litany prayer below about sticky grief, may you be encouraged by the God of mercy who helps us move towards wholeness and growth. May you and all members of our St Peters community know that even in times of sticky grief, emotional health is possible.
God of Mercy, God of Tenderness, God of Nurture….
We acknowledge that the only way out of our grief is through it.
We acknowledge that we must pay attention to our emotions in order to be whole persons.
We acknowledge that we would often rather avoid our sadness than pay attention to it.
We acknowledge that grief can be sticky, unpredictable, and hard to shake off.
We acknowledge that there are some mountains we cannot move under our own power.
Over and over, You have shown us that You are good, and Your love endures forever.
We know that You lovingly show us this often, because we are apt to forget.
We know that Your goodness does not necessarily safeguard us from pain.
We know that our pain does not negate Your goodness.
Help us to walk faithfully through our pain and sadness.
Help us to engage in lamentation, in the tradition of the saints who came before us.
Help us to remember that our anger, sadness, disappointment, and grief do not put you off.
Help us move forward:
Toward growth
Toward wisdom
Toward emotional health
Toward wholeness
Toward reconciliation between our faith and our emotions.
We are helpless, and require Christ’s assistance.
We are undone, and require re-making.
We are brokenhearted, and require healing.
We are poor in spirit, and in need of the kingdom of Heaven. Amen.

Audiences of St Peters are invited to return to the world of Harry Potter live on stage. Our 2025 Senior College production is the Queensland premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – High School Edition, a play that has enchanted audiences worldwide.
Nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the wizarding world is at peace… or so it seems. Harry is now a Ministry of Magic official and a father, but his son, Albus, is struggling under the weight of the Potter legacy. When Albus is sorted into Slytherin and befriends Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Harry’s oldest rival, the two boys form an unlikely bond that sets off a chain of events neither could predict. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a story about friendship, family, and what it really means to shape your own future… even when the past won’t let go.
For our students, the production is an opportunity to stretch their acting skills, embrace complex characters, and explore the magic of technical theatre. From spell-casting stage effects to the emotional bonds between generations, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child promises to be one of our most ambitious and exciting productions yet.
There are three performances across two days (10–11 October).
Grab your tickets now at: https://www.stpeters.qld.edu.au/events/harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child

Children’s Book Week is, of course, not all about the costumes, but our Primary Years students and staff did us proud on Friday with their connections to favourite books through costumes and embodying their favourite characters. From an assortment of crayons (The Day the Crayons Quit) to Sherlock Bones (Sherlock Bones and the Natural History Mystery) to a shiver of sharks from the non-fiction section of the library—our Prep to Year Six students showcased hundreds of popular books and shared them with their peers.
Our Prep–Year 6 Book Week Assembly was a great opportunity for us to come together as a Primary Years community and celebrate the work that has been done this term in both library lessons and classrooms, exploring the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Shortlisted books and digging deeply into what it is that makes a quality book. There was polite applause and excited cheering at our assembly as we announced the 2025 CBCA Book of the Year Award winners (and St Peters winners) in the categories of Picture Book, Younger Reader, Early Childhood, Eve Pownall Information Books and New Illustrator Award. Working with the CBCA judging criteria throughout this term has given our students insight into the process of critically examining text and images, as well as the amount of work that goes into the publication of a book. We are particularly fortunate to have a current CBCA judge working here at St Peters, Lower Primary Teacher Librarian, Mrs Lotte ten Hacken, who was interviewed at our assembly about the process.
Special thanks to our Year 5 assembly MCs Eva, Zac, Scarlett, Theo, Arabella, Chandler, Alexa, Aurora, Tom, and Freddy.
The Primary Years Library team would also like to thank all of the parents and caregivers who supported Book Week 2025 with costume preparation, The 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge (keep an eye out for certificates and our ‘limited edition’ reader bag tags and book worms), and your commitment to supporting your child’s reading development now and into the future. School libraries play an important role in the promotion of recreational reading and access to quality literature, and St Peters students make great use of our excellent and ever-growing collections.
Holiday borrowing will be available over the September break for P–6 students. Don’t forget that you can also access StoryBox Hub, Wheelers eBooks, and Bolinda audio books from home.

As we move beyond the halfway point of the term, Junior High is full of energy and activity. Assessments are beginning, concerts are taking shape, and our sporting calendar is in full swing. It is a busy and exciting time for our students as they continue to balance academic, cultural, and cocurricular commitments.
A reminder to all students and families that correct shoes are to be worn as outlined in the College’s uniform guidelines. We have noticed recently an increase in shoes that do not comply with the guidelines. Thank you for your continued support in maintaining a high standard of presentation across Junior High.
One of our College’s core values is belonging to and building community. This is reflected in how we care for our school grounds and how we conduct ourselves beyond the campus. Students are encouraged to remain respectful while wearing the College uniform, particularly when travelling on public transport or walking to and from school. Small actions of courtesy and responsibility make a significant difference in how we are perceived by the broader community.
It has been wonderful to see so many students taking up the opportunity to explore our new cross curriculum offerings. These subjects are designed to encourage curiosity and creativity across different learning areas, and it is pleasing to see students engaging with these new pathways.
Our Year 9 cohort has been actively involved in a variety of service initiatives this term. Students have contributed their time and effort to programs such as ORCA, the St Lucia Community Gardens, and Emmanuel City Mission. These experiences give our young people the chance to grow in empathy, strengthen community connections and put their values into action.
You can read more about these initiatives through the following links:

On Saturday 16 August, the St Peters community gathered in the Dron Auditorium to celebrate the 2025 Performer of the Year Recital Final. Nine exceptional young musicians—Chloe R (flute), Dan D (cello), Sophie P (piano), Indigo J (soprano), Sylvia D (violin), William C (trombone), Nicholas S (cello), Mandi S (piano), and Lucas O (euphonium)—took to the stage and showed a wonderfully supportive audience exactly why they had been chosen as finalists.
Each performer offered a unique musical experience, demonstrating not only their technical command and musicality but also a level of professional stage presence well beyond their years. A highlight of the evening was the pre-prepared introduction videos, which gave the audience insight into each finalist’s repertoire choice while also showcasing their personality and passion for music.
While the adjudicators deliberated, the audience was treated to a brilliant guest performance by the CONISA Piano Trio, who delivered Turina’s Piano Trio No. 2 – 3rd movement with flair and virtuosity.
The adjudicators were genuinely moved by the consistent standard across all nine finalists, praising the dedication, commitment, and artistry of each performer. After much consideration, Sophie P (Year 12) was announced as the 2025 Performer of the Year Recital winner, an honour that recognises her outstanding musicianship and presence on stage.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all music staff and private teachers for their ongoing support and encouragement of our young musicians. The evening was a wonderful celebration of talent, dedication, and the thriving culture of music at St Peters.

This week, Visual Art students Coco, Harry, Esther, and Debi attended the Wonderstruck Gallery Day at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), South Bank. Led by acclaimed artist Brian Robinson, along with Aniway and Lele Aquilizan, the program provided students with a day of rich artistic engagement through discussions, formal presentations, and a hands-on workshop that explored materiality, pattern, and repetition.
In the workshop, students created striking sculptures inspired by Brian Robinson’s work, using recycled materials to explore the themes and techniques presented. The day brought together young artists from across the region to collaborate, experiment, and share ideas.
At St Peters, students regularly enjoy bespoke opportunities to extend their interests and learning in the arts beyond the classroom.
Thank you to Ms Dobrenov for supporting our students on the day.

To keep the momentum going, we’ve introduced new incentives for students who achieve a personal best (PB) in any event. Whether it’s a faster sprint, a longer jump, or a stronger throw, every improvement matters, and we encourage all athletes to stay committed, attend meets, and push themselves in training.

Senior Girls AFL Team Makes History in Debut Season!
This year marks an exciting milestone for St Peters Lutheran College, with the introduction of our very first Senior Girls AFL team in the AFL Queensland Schools Cup competition. Comprised of students from Years 10–12, the team has embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, skill, and determination.
Throughout Term 3, the girls have shown remarkable progress and teamwork, recording convincing wins against several strong opponents. Their results to date include:
The victory over Varsity College is especially noteworthy, as they were the runners-up in the 2024 competition. These outstanding performances have now secured St Peters a place in the semi-finals against Mountain Creek SHS on 9 September—a remarkable achievement in their debut season.
The girls’ journey has been a testament to their hard work, sportsmanship, and the support of their coaches and school community. A special thank you goes to our coaches Chris Cant and Dean Johnson, for their guidance, encouragement, and commitment to the program.
With the grand final on the horizon in early Term 4, excitement is building as the team continues to chase success. We congratulate the players and coaching staff on their achievements so far and wish them the very best for the finals.

Last weekend, enthusiastic Lego builders came together for an afternoon of fun competition, hosted by the Digital Parent Support Group. Fourteen teams competed in a range of Lego challenges, concluding with prizes awarded for the top three overall teams and judges' awards.
Challenges included:
The Panther and the Robot Play Esports
In a city of lights, both shiny and bright,
Lived Pippa the Panther, swift as the night.
She met Rollo the Robot, with buttons that glowed,
“Let’s play some esports!” his circuits bestowed.
Pippa was speedy, her paws quick and neat,
Rollo was clever, his plans hard to beat.
They raced through the levels, they battled with cheer,
“Together we’ve got this—the trophy is near!”
They won, but the best part was easy to see:
The joy of good friendship and true teamwork’s glee.
Congratulations to our winning team, Cool Cats, for taking home the major prize. Thanks also to parents from the Digital Parent Support Group and Robotics team members for helping to run the event. We look forward to hosting similar events in the future to bring Lego enthusiasts together.
