I wouldn’t normally call myself a couch potato, but since the Paris Olympics began, that’s what I’ve become, and I’m guessing I’m not the only one. Any spare moment I’ve had, I’ve intentionally spent in front of the TV, watching the best athletes in the world compete for Olympic glory.

I have always loved the Olympics and remember, as a little girl, poring over the ‘Olympic Gold ‘84’ book, with Robert De Castella on the cover. I loved dreaming of becoming an Olympic champion (not, as it turns out, a realistic dream for me), learning about the different Sports and reading up on athletes from countries I had never even heard of at that stage in my young life.

Seeing athletes perform at their best, in high pressure moments, is something to behold. But even more fascinating, are the stories behind each athlete. And every athlete has a story. I love hearing what has brought so many of these athletes to this point in time. I love hearing of the obstacles they have had to overcome. I love hearing about their growth as people. I love hearing about the people in their lives who stuck with them, the community that surrounded them when the going got tough, the community that cheered them on and encouraged them in their pursuit of being the best they could be.

I have not seen or heard a single athlete, when interviewed, say “I did it all myself. No one helped me. It’s just all been about me.” Instead, they are very quick to acknowledge the community behind them – and how getting to this place has been a team effort.

At St Peters, we are a community – a learning community where people can flourish. Not just a place where lots of individuals come to learn, but a community where people are known, loved, valued and belong. A community that encourages, that equips and that empowers each member of the community to be the best they can be.

As a Christian community, Christ’s sacrificial love is at the heart of all that we do. “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). This love is lived out in our behaviour - how we speak to each other, how we act toward each other, how we encourage each other, how we forgive each other - how we do life together.

Each one of us has a role and responsibility, and a way to contribute to life in community. Whether a staff member, parent or student, we each play a part in building up the community of St Peters. The words of 1 Peter 4:10 encourage us in this: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

So, as you watch the Olympics this week and the Paralympics later on this month, listen out for the stories of the teams and communities behind the athletes. Take a moment to reflect on the ‘team’ that helped you to become who you are, and consider this community of St Peters, and how you serve and contribute and enable it to be a learning community where people flourish.

St Peters offers 3 courses in IB Diploma Mathematics:

• Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches – Higher Level (AA HL)
• Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches – Standard Level (AA SL)
• Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation – Standard Level AI SL)

Analysis & Approaches is a more traditional mathematics course with calculator and non-calculator examinations.

Applications & Interpretation is heavily statistics and functions based with use of a calculator in both final examinations.

This diagram indicates the teaching time and assessment content distribution for topics within both courses.

Note that we do not offer AI HL.

A student taking AA HL has achieved high (B+ and above) results in Year 10 Advanced Mathematics.

This student enjoys mathematical challenge and is looking at future study either in the mathematical field, or one closely related. Students receiving a pass level in AA HL receive 2 additional rank points on their converted Combined Rank Score (ATAR equivalent). Universities will also apply credit and/or exemption for some first-year mathematical courses, dependant on achievement level. A pass in AA HL is a QCAA Specialist Maths equivalent, meeting all tertiary mathematical pre-requisites nationally and globally.

A student taking AA SL has achieved good results (C+ and above) in Year 10 Advanced Mathematics. Whilst students can select IB mathematics upon the completion of Year 10 General Mathematics, it is not advisable.

This student may or may not be looking at future study either in the mathematical field, or one closely related. A pass in AA SL is a QCAA Maths Methods equivalent, meeting all tertiary mathematical pre-requisites nationally. Overseas requirements can be country / university specific – refer to specific university entrance information.

A student taking AI SL has achieved good results (C+ and above) in Year 10 Advanced Mathematics. Whilst students can select IB mathematics upon the completion of Year 10 General Mathematics, it is not advisable.

This student may or may not be looking at future study either in the mathematical field, or one closely related. A pass in AI SL is a QCAA Maths Methods equivalent in Queensland. Interstate universities entrance requirements vary – refer to specific university entrance information. For example, Sydney University will recognise AI SL as QCAA Maths Methods equivalent where the achievement level is 5 or above. For the majority of interstate and international universities, the AI SL course is a QCAA General Maths equivalent.

Overall % achievement and grading for November 2023 can be used as a guide. These grade boundaries can vary for each examination session. An IB grade of 4 is recognised as a passing level for tertiary pre-requisite attainment.

Multicultural Week

The Primary Years community continues to embrace the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile, fostering an international mindset that shone brightly through our Multicultural Week. This week’s events are a true reflection of our College’s ethos, representing a vibrant tapestry woven from a rich array of cultures, perspectives, and languages.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who actively participated in the diverse range of activities throughout this week. A special thank you to Maggie Jin, our Primary Years Parent Liaise Partner, and the dedicated group of parents and students who volunteered their time and energy to make these activities possible.

This celebration of multiculturalism and unity not only fosters a sense of belonging among our students but also advances our mission to nurture future citizens who are well-prepared to thrive in and contribute positively to our interconnected world.

Year 6 - Where we are in Place and Time

Last Friday, the Year 6 students presented their Museum of Migration as a culmination of their recent inquiry into the impact of migration on society. A combination of English, History, Digital Technologies and German, this unit encouraged students to develop their understanding of diversity and community. During the unit, they learnt about the various ways that Australia has experienced migration throughout our history and the impact it has had on our communities. They also inquired into the experiences of migrants and looked at the perspective of those arriving in a new and foreign land.

Friday’s Museum of Migration was an opportunity for students to step into the shoes of a fictional migrant character as the vehicle for sharing what they had learnt. The students modelled these characters on what they had discovered, sometimes from their own family experience.

This unit is an important precursor to our upcoming PYP Exhibition. It allows students to develop their own line of inquiry to demonstrate their depth of knowledge and understanding of the central idea and share this more broadly to the learning community. The event sets high expectations for the upcoming Exhibition, which is always a highlight of the Year 6’s final year in the Primary Years.

Year 8 had a great time at their QCCC Mapleton Camp in Week 1 of the term.

Students excelled at making new connections, and they embraced challenges with impressive courage and determination. Many special memories were made - students scaled new heights, worked as a team, and enjoyed the great outdoors through their camp out experience.

A huge thank you to the dedicated staff and everyone involved in making this camp a success.

We’ve been absolutely buzzing about SPYGT 2024! 

For the first time ever, the Dron Auditorium was sold out with hundreds of pink-clad supporters cheering on our talented Junior High and Senior School students. The night was an incredible showcase of performances from our six amazing finalists: Fraser S (Year 12), Jazzy P (Year 9), Charlie R (Year 12), Ella K (Year 10), Josh S (Year 7), and 22 Wight St (Year 12). 

A special congratulations to our winner, Jazzy, who brought the house down with her powerful rendition of ‘Leave a Light On’ by Tom Walker. We also enjoyed acts from our Prefects, Year 12 Boarder Boys, and staff. The energy was electric, and it was wonderful to see families and friends come together to support all our performers. To top the night off, SPYGT 2024 was also a fantastic fundraiser for the College. Jazzy, donated over $3500.00 from ticket sales to Beyond Blue, and the canteen also raised $1100.00 for the annual Cambodia Service Tour.

Thank you and well done to our College Captains and everyone who helped to make SPYGT 2024 unforgettable. Your enthusiasm and energy were key to the night’s success! A note from one of the College Captains:

"I think it’s safe to say that SPYGT this year was a resounding success. Sold-out for the first time ever, over 1000 people dressed in pink filled the seats of the Dron Auditorium last Friday night. As a vibrant celebration of the amazing talents of students throughout Junior High and Senior School, the night showcased a diverse range of performances from our six finalists, as well as exhibition acts from the Prefects, Year 12 Boarder Boys, and Staff. It was great to see families and friends come together to create such an incredible atmosphere and support all our performers. The event of course also served as a key fundraising event for the College.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to making SPYGT so memorable. Your enthusiasm, energy and generosity were all instrumental in creating such a spectacle, and we really appreciate all your support."

On Sunday 28 July, the St Peters Choral program presented their Choirs in the Cathedral Concert in St John’s Cathedral, Ann Street Brisbane. The concert included both traditional and contemporary choral repertoire performed by Junior High Songmakers, Vox Camerata, St Peters Chorale and St Peters Chamber Chorale.

It was exciting for the choirs to have the opportunity to sing in the wonderful ambience and acoustic of St John’s Cathedral accompanied by the might of the St John’s Cathedral pipe organ! It was also a preparatory concert for St Peters Chorale and Chamber Chorale in the lead-up to the International Tour to the UK, Germany and Austria in December 2024/January 2025.

All choirs should be very proud of their performances which were enthusiastically received by the capacity audience.

Students at St Peters are fortunate to have the opportunity this term to take part in music masterclasses held in the PAC on Friday afternoons 3:30pm – 5:30pm.

These masterclasses are open lessons in which an expert musician works with a number of selected students in front of an audience. The intention is to provide a learning experience for the performers and audience members. Those in the audience benefit and learn from watching the performances and hearing the suggestions given to the performers by the expert teacher.

On Friday 9 August, we will welcome –

1. Patrick Murphy, Cello Performance Fellow at the University of Queensland School of Music will lead an Upper Strings Masterclass and
2. Brendan Joyce from Camerata, Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra will lead a Cello Masterclass.

All students and members of the St Peters community are invited to be part of the audience for these masterclasses.

Aic boys touch

We are thrilled to announce that St Peters will be entering boys' teams into the Years 5–6 AIC Touch Gala Day on Saturday 19 October. This event is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and teamwork in a fast-paced and exciting environment. Touch Football not only develops agility and coordination but also encourages strategic thinking and communication. We encourage all interested boys in Years 5-6 to start practising. ANDREWS CUP TRACK & FIELD METRO MEET #2

On Tuesday 6 August, our young athletes from the Indooroopilly and Springfield campuses once again demonstrated their dedication and skill at the second Andrews Cup Track & Field meet. With 54 girls from Years 3–6 participating, the event was a fantastic showcase of talent and determination.

The competition featured a variety of events, including discus, high jump, the 100m sprint, and the grueling 800m run. Our athletes gave it their all, with many achieving personal bests and showing great sportsmanship throughout.

A special thank you goes out to Mr Kotzur, our principal, along with Mr Johns, Miss Miles, and Mr Glass, whose support and encouragement were greatly appreciated by both the students and staff. Their presence made a significant impact on the day.

This meet also served as an important step in our preparations for the upcoming Inter-Lutheran Track & Field Championships on Monday 19 August. A team will be selected from this group of competitors to represent St Peters, and we look forward to seeing them continue to excel.

For Years 5–6 basketball gala afternoon

Get ready for an exciting event! On Monday 19 August, our Years 5–6 girls will be participating in the CaSSSa Basketball Gala at St Ritas, starting at 4:00pm. Transport will be provided for all students. Any girls interested can register HERE, but please note that this event coincides with the Inter-Lutheran Track & Field, so students cannot participate in both. Students who are playing Basketball in Sport for Life will be prioritised. We look forward to seeing our young athletes showcase their skills and enjoy a fantastic afternoon of Basketball!

MSW Primary Years Cricket Term 4

In Term 4, St Peters participates in a club competition within our local area known as the MSW Cricket Competition. This competition takes place on Saturdays and includes teams from every age group from Years 4–11.

The only exception is the younger girls' team, which plays in a 20/20 format on Friday nights under lights, with games starting at 6:00PM.

The competition runs over 10 weeks, from Saturday 5 October to Saturday 7 December.

This is a user pay activity which is $395.00 for the season.

The cost covers 12 weeks of training and games, including the expenses for coaches. The fee also includes a free training shirt, training hat, and a baggy maroon for game day.

CELEBRATING PRIMARY SPORTING SUCCESS

What a week it has been for our swimmers! Eva, in Year 5, delivered a fantastic performance at the national swimming championships, earning a Bronze Medal in the 50m Backstroke and a Silver Medal in the 200m Medley Relay. She also achieved a commendable fourth place in the 100m Backstroke.

Zoe, in Year 6, represented Queensland at the School Sports Australia Swimming Championships, showcasing remarkable determination throughout the year. She began her journey at the Northern Eagles Trials, competing in five events. At the Metwest Trials, Zoe qualified for the 100m Freestyle, where she swam a personal best in the heats to earn a spot in the finals. She excelled with a strong Second place finish in the Girls 11 200m Freestyle. Congratulations to Zoe and Eva on their outstanding achievements!

All swimmers will need to be assessed. The assessments are free and will take between five to 10 per swimmer.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Congratulations to the 42 St Peters students that participated in the QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics competition last Friday at Moreton Bay College.

The cohort this year saw girls in Years 7 – 12, from both Indooroopilly and Springfield campuses come together to form nine groups across Year 7, Year 8, B Grade, A Grade and Open divisions.

Led by Head coach, Vanja Stok, the program has once again grown in strength this year with St Peters winning three pennants in the Year 7i, Year 8ii and A Grade divisions.

These results are a testament to the hard work and commitment the girls have shown in training each week. They have spent many hours perfecting their skills and mastering choreography that included several tricky exchanges with balls and hoops, all while working in synchronisation with each other and the music.

A big thank you to the wonderful coaching group this year, who have always been there to assist and support the girls, also ensuring it was a fun and enjoyable experience for all groups.

Thank you to all the girls who participated in the program this year. Rhythmic Gymnastics is a beautiful Olympic Sport, and we hope to see even more students joining next year!

Kai G (Year 11) who attended the SLSA Australian titles for pool rescue over the weekend and recorded four Gold, two Silver and two Bronze individual medals as well as a Silver Relay Medal. We look forward to your results at Worlds!

Tennis News

Another great round of fixtures, congratulations on your efforts over the weekend and your continuing attendance at training as we are struggling with sickness and injuries. The commitment to your team, especially from our reserves has paid off. Good luck with this weekend’s competition against Marist College Ashgrove.

basketball News

Congratulations to all involved in the AIC Basketball focus round, the round started off on Friday afternoon with our Year 12 basketballers and Senior leaders creating a tunnel for our Year 6 students to run out on to the courts. While on Saturday the gym was filled to the brim with everyone attempting to catch a glimpse of the game and the half-time show. A fantastic display of school spirit all around!

On Monday 12 August at 5:30pm our First V will take on the St Peters Old Scholars in the annual SPOSA Basketball match. Get down to the court and cheer for our past and present basketball stars!

track & Field News

With the first Track & Field meet for boys in two weeks, it is essential that boys are attending their nominated sessions consistently. Athletes should prioritise Tuesday afternoon sessions at UQ and also sprinters on Wednesday afternoon at Mayer oval for best opportunity for selection and preparation for Relays.

For our St Peters Sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen Sport, so they can improve and refine Sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their team-mates.

If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.

Matchday expectations 

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniform items can be purchased from Shop45 or via School Locker, please refer to the website for opening hours. For matchdays enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or Crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

Basketball

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

At Games – All St Peters AIC Basketballers must be wearing:

• St Peters jersey
• St Peters maroon PE/sports shorts
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Rugby League

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

Training – students must wear their ‘Program Shirt’ to their training session.

Games – students are to arrive at their game wearing:

• St Peters ‘program shirt’ and then get changed into their jersey
• Mouthguard is mandatory
• Long maroon football socks
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Tennis

• Students to wear full PE uniform with tennis hat to games. First IV to wear the First uniform presented at the start of the season.

Track & Field

• Students to wear the Track & Field singlet to all meets

ST PETERS STUDENT SPECTATORS ON GAMEDAYS

Please note, dogs are not permitted on campus to accompany spectators to watch Football or Rugby fixtures (service dogs permitted).

Should any St Peters student be attending a St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that they are dressed in St Peters formal uniform. Should a student not be wearing the correct attire when attending a sporting event/game, they may be asked to leave the venue.

WET WEATHER AND CANCELLATIONS

With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.

Last week, four of our FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team members attended a unique competition in Adelaide; Dane S, Harry S, Gilbert G and Caleb N. Eight Australian teams were invited to compete at an FTC competition at engineering company, Rockwell Automation's annual conference, ROKLive ROKLive 2024 Adelaide | Rockwell Automation. St Peters attended the inaugural event at the Gold Coast in 2023 and were invited back again this year.

The team played five qualification matches and the semi finals before finishing in the third placed alliance. It was a tough competition, with some highly competitive national-level teams. This off-season event will help propel our FTC teams toward the new season release in early September.

Following the competition, our team received a private tour of the exhibition floor where they conversed with engineers about careers, new technologies and robotics. The engineers at this conference were engaged with the robotics competition and have asked for teams to return at next year’s conference. Rockwell Automation is one of our team sponsors and sponsor the international FIRST Tech Challenge Competition as well.

Open Day Digital Display

Congratulations to Digital program students involved in the Open Day display. Students from Years 5–12 displayed their robotics’ prowess to a very enthusiastic audience. We had a team of dedicated students who volunteered their time to help setup, speak to guests and pull-down at the end of the day.

We were able to portray the progression of robotics through the School. Our display included Lego toddlers’ station, FIRST Lego League, sumo robotics, Lego Rubik’s cube solving robot competitions, FIRST Tech Challenge robots on a playing field and Rocky, our 50kg showstopping FIRST Robotics Competition creation. We were also supported by the Digital Parent Support Group who keenly shared the role that parents play in supporting students in our Digital programs.
