To enhance safety on all internal roads, St Peters Lutheran College has implemented new speed limits. The general speed limit is now 20kph, while shared zones are strictly limited to 10kph. This includes Chapel Road, Prep Centre crossing, and College Drive (from Ross Roy to the end of the College Bus stop). New signage has been installed to indicate these changes.

Drop Off & Pick Up Guidelines

For the safety of all students, staff, and parents, please adhere to the following guidelines when driving and parking around the College:

• Set Down & Pick Up Restrictions: Set down and pick up of students on College grounds are not permitted. Parents and visitors must drop off and pick up students outside the College grounds from 7:00am to 8:15am and 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
• Non-Designated Zones: The following locations are not to be used for set down or pick up at any time:
  • Ross Roy visitors parking
  • Business Centre visitors parking
  • Schneider Staff Carpark
  • Chapel Carpark
  • 50m Pool entrance area / Founders Way
  • Area beside Boys Boarding
  • 25m Pool Carpark
  • Primary Years Staff Carpark (near Stolz Oval)
  • On any roundabout

• Road Rules: Follow all road rules, signs, and directions as you would on any public road. Pay attention to 'No standing' and 'Parking' signs. Never double park or park in 'No stopping' zones or on yellow lines.

• Boom Gates: Prep Centre and Rainforest boom gates are closed during the following periods:
  • 7:45am – 8:15am
  • 2:45pm – 3:30pm
• Parking: Prep Parents are to only park in designated bays in the Prep Carpark. Double parking is prohibited.
• Student Drivers: Students and learner drivers are not permitted to drive through the College grounds at any time.
• Student Drivers: Student drivers are not allowed to park on College ground at any time. 
• Mobile Phones: Do not use mobile phones while driving.

Drop Off & Pick Up Outside College Grounds

Child safety and illegal parking around school zones remain a concern. Parking spaces during peak times are limited, and unsafe practices can arise. Brisbane City Council will regulate parking activities to ensure safe driving during these times. Council officers will monitor school zones, and fines may be issued for illegal parking (e.g., parking on yellow lines).

On Sunday 28 July commencing at 2:30pm, select choirs from the St Peters Choral program will present Choirs in the Cathedral in St John’s Cathedral, Ann St. Brisbane. The concert will include both traditional and contemporary choral repertoire performed by Junior High Songmakers, Vox Camerata, St Peters Chorale and St Peters Chamber Chorale.

It will be exciting for the choirs to have the opportunity to sing in the wonderful ambience and acoustic of St John’s Cathedral accompanied by the St John’s Cathedral pipe organ!

Introducing the 'St Peters Make Your Own Story Book with Illustrations' creative writing competition. We're on the lookout for original, captivating bilingual storybooks adorned with beautiful illustrations, crafted by you!

The IB program at our school emphasises the importance of creativity, activity and service (CAS) as integral components of student development. In line with this philosophy, our Year 11 IB Chinese students have taken the initiative to create a student-led cultural club. This club aims to teach Chinese language and culture, including activities such as calligraphy and traditional painting, to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity within our community.

The inaugural session focused on language instruction and was met with enthusiastic participation from both students across different Sub-Schools. This interactive lunchtime event fostered a productive learning environment. Future sessions will expand to include Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting, offering a comprehensive exploration of Chinese cultural arts.

We look forward to many more successful sessions and the continued growth of this wonderful initiative. Congratulations to our Year 11 IB Chinese students for their dedication and leadership in promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity at our school.

The Best Way to Say ‘No!’ to Your Kids

One of the most difficult parts of parenting is saying no. Unfortunately, sometimes we must. Sometimes plans change, or something might not be safe. At times, someone else’s needs may matter more, or our child wants what they can’t have.

And while they might not thank you for it, setting limits is one of the best things you can do for your child. Saying ‘no’ teaches our kids important lessons about life, independence, empathy, and getting along. Research shows that the best parenting style is one that combines setting limits with warmth. These parents are nurturing and responsive, but they set firm limits for their children. They listen to their child’s point of view, but they don’t always accept it. And it works! Their children tend to be friendly, self-reliant, cooperative, curious, and goal oriented.

So how can we say no while still letting our kids know that we empathise with them? How can we be firm and warm?

Give them their wish in fantasy.

It’s important to remember that our kids have big feelings, and that’s ok! We might need to limit behaviour, but big feelings are allowed. And while our kids don’t always need us to say yes, they do need to feel heard. All humans are more willing to cooperate once their feelings have been acknowledged. Our kids are no different.

So, when your child wants something that you can’t (or won’t) say yes to, you can still show him that you empathise. Give him his wish in fantasy.

Here is an example. Imagine you’re in the supermarket with your child. You’re at the checkout, and it’s been a long, tiring day. You just want to get out of there and get home. Suddenly your child pipes up, ‘I want a lolly!’ You inwardly groan. It’s just before dinner, and you need to say no! You can feel a tantrum brewing. The last thing you need is a public meltdown!

But it doesn’t have to end in a meltdown.

Here’s what you do: First, connect with your child. Touch him on the arm, get down to his level, and make eye contact. 90% of good parenting is connection.

Then, give him what he wants in fantasy. Say, ‘I wish you could have a lolly! What kind would you get?’ Hopefully, your child will start to calm down right away and think about the answer. ‘Freddo Frog’, he might say. ‘Oh, that’s a great choice. I would pick that lolly, or maybe freckles.’ Depending on how big your child’s feelings are, you might need to extend the fantasy. You might say, ‘What if our car was made of lollies? We’d never have to go to the supermarket again!’ Your child might say, ‘The wheels could be cookies!’ When you give your child what he wants in fantasy, it shows him that you understand his feelings and that you care. Once he hears this, it is much easier for him to transition from being overwhelmed by his big feelings to dealing with a situation that, from his perspective, is less than ideal.

When you engage your child in fantasy, you are speaking to him in his favourite language: play. This reinforces your connection. It also shows your child that even if the world sometimes feels unfair, it is basically safe. This is because he has felt heard and understood.

We might not always get a round of applause, but putting this principle into practice will help us through the tough “no” moments with our children. They may still want what they can’t have, but we’ll be able to playfully get them through it. And in the process, teach them.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A reminder that the Year 7 Immunisation clinic provided by Ozcare is on Tuesday 23 July from 9:00am. Students will be receiving Gardasil (HPV) and Boostrix (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis). No further clinics are required this year.

Students will be taken to the clinic at the PAC by their teacher, including those students who are not getting vaccinated. Any student who is absent on the day can obtain a free make up vaccination through either their GP (excluding their consultation fee), or your local Brisbane City Council Immunisation Clinic.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Compose Program is designed to introduce secondary school students to composing for orchestral instruments, extending learning in the Senior phase of their schooling beyond the general requirements of the curriculum. Through workshops and face-to-face activities under the guidance of QSO Composition Mentors Craig Allister Young and Timothy Tate, participating students have the opportunity to write compositions for the QSO Connect Ensemble, resulting in a final presentation at the QSO Studio in South Bank, Brisbane.

This year, it involves 29 high school students, including William C, were selected from across Queensland to be part of this program. Some students wrote their compositions as a team, while the majority (like William C) worked as individuals. The task was to write something around the theme of ‘Home’.

All the students’ compositions were played in a concert at the ABC Studios on Saturday 15 June by the QSO Connect Orchestra, a 13 piece orchestra that travels around Queensland playing concerts, running workshops and generally ‘connecting’ with communities.

In one further exciting instalment to William’s QSO Compose experience this year, the QSO has selected William’s composition ‘Reflections’ to be performed throughout Queensland as part of their 2024 tour repertoire.

They wrote: Due to the exceptional quality of your composition from QSO Compose this year, we would like to hire this work to perform to audiences across Queensland. This is a unique opportunity and something we have never done before……..This hire would extend until the end of 2024 and would be played by QSO Musicians on tour to Chinchilla, Roma, Tara and St. George.

Additionally, the QSO has invited Will C to compose a work for 6 Cellos which will be performed by members of the QSO in their Chamber Players 5 Concert on 13 October.

WDNA Netball and Firebird training

The WDNA players are now halfway through their Netball season. We would like to extend a massive thank you to the coaches, managers, parents, and players for their unwavering commitment to the program. These girls have braved wet, cold Saturdays with incredible attitudes and resilience. We have enjoyed seeing the players grow and develop in their game.

Recently, Our WDNA girls had the incredible opportunity to train with Isabelle Shearer and Lara Dunkley from the Firebirds, the first session was at the end of last term and again in the first week of Term 3.

During these sessions with the Firebirds, the students enjoyed expert coaching, autograph signings, a Q&A session and photo opportunities. The girls were thrilled to meet Isabelle and Lara.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Netball Parent Support Group for organising and funding this fantastic experience for our WDNA girls.

Years 4-6 Sport for life

This week our Years 4-6 students begin their six week Sport for Life unit on a Friday afternoon. We are delighted with the range of activities on offer for our students this term and look forward to seeing the sporting action over the coming weeks. Activities this term include Ultimate Frisbee, Rugby League, Basketball, Tennis, Wellbeing Walk, Dance, Track & Field and Netball.

PRIMARY AIC Tennis

Our recent AIC Tennis Trial Round against Villanova was a display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship from our young athletes. The event showcased the talent and hard work our students have been putting into their training.

The Year 6 Tennis teams delivered outstanding performances, demonstrating their dedication and skill on the court. Both the A and B teams emerged victorious, with the A team securing a dominant 8-0 win and the B team achieving a well-fought 5-3 victory. These results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our Year 6 players, who continue to impress with their teamwork and resilience.

While the Year 5 Tennis teams faced tough competition, they displayed great effort and sportsmanship throughout the matches. Despite their best efforts, both teams were unable to secure a win this time. However, a special mention goes to Vincent Y for his exceptional performance. Vincent's determination and skill were on full display as he clinched a thrilling victory in the singles match via a tie-break, representing the A1 team. His win was the highlight of the morning and a source of inspiration for his teammates.

As we continue to strive for personal and team excellence in our sporting endeavours, I would like to highlight the significance of regular training attendance for our girls. Attending training sessions is crucial not just for enhancing team performance but also for fostering a culture of respect and commitment.

Equally important is the practice of communicating absences in advance. If a student cannot attend a training session, our expectation is that they communicate the absence, in advance, with the relevant Sports coordinator. This allows the coach to plan and avoid unnecessary disruptions. Unexplained absences can undermine the cohesion and spirit of the team, affecting not just performance but morale.

We understand that juggling multiple commitments can be challenging. If any student is struggling to manage their schedule, I encourage them to visit Sports House for a discussion with our staff. We are here to support students to find solutions to balance their commitments effectively.

Term 3 Open Team Presentation

Last week Mr Kotzur joined us to present the Open uniforms to our 2024 QGSSSA Open Hockey, Netball, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Tennis and Volleyball teams and our BSRA Open 1st VIII crew.

It was wonderful to have parents attend the presentation as we celebrated the achievements of the girls prior to the start of the season.

During the presentation, Mr Kotzur spoke about the honour of representing St Peters at the highest level and the importance of being role models for our younger students. He also spoke about the significance of our motto ‘Plus Ultra’, encouraging the girls to strive for personal and team excellence in their respective Sports. We thank Mr Kotzur for joining us and motivating the girls.

We now shift our focus to the opening regatta of the BSRA season at the Queensland State Rowing Centre, Wyaralong Dam on Saturday. A reminder that a full-dress rehearsal will take place on Wednesday 24 July in the Indoor Gym. Presentations will start at 5:00pm and rehearsal performances will begin at 5:30pm.

Rugby League News

What a debut for St Peters in their first ever game of AIC Rugby League! Both the players and the crowd turned up emphatically, with the day starting off with the Juniors recording a victory and the Senior Rugby League team winning in front of an enthusiastic Focus Round crowd, well fed by the Rugby Parent Support Group.

For our debut in Rugby League, this game was our only home game as the AIC works on a Gala day format and the boys turned up! This week our 7B Rugby League team will play St Edmund’s College at Villanova, while our Second XIII have a bye this weekend. 

A standout moment from Year 12 student Sam C, who scored a historic first try for St Peters.

Reflecting on the experience, Sam shared, "Being my first ever Rugby League game, I was incredibly nervous, but wearing the new white and maroon jersey and being tunnelled on by my peers was absolutely amazing and lifted my confidence. The crowd was electric, and I really appreciated every person who turned up and cheered for us. Even though it was a hot and rough match, it made us all play ten times better. The noise of the St Peters crowd when I broke through and ran towards my first try made me feel like I was running faster than I had ever run before. It was a memory that I will treasure for the rest of my life, and I am grateful that I got the opportunity to compete for a school that I am proud to represent."

Tennis News

After a detailed pre-season complete with competitive trials and a training camp, the boys took to the courts across all corners of Brisbane for the AIC trial round against Villanova College. Our Tennis program started with a strong start with majority of teams coming away with wins last weekend. We turn our attention to St Edmund’s College this week where our Primary students will play at Ambrose Treacy College, our Junior Years 7-8 will be at Home at Lohe Street Courts and our Senior Years 9-12 students will take the away trip to Ipswich playing at George Adler Tennis centre on clay. Seniors make sure you bring your herring bone shoes!

Our basketballers faced mixed results against Villanova with several teams having to dig deep against Villanova, many with limited numbers.

To ensure a smoother start against St Edmund’s College, it is imperative that any known absences be communicated to both coaches and Basketball Coordinator Ms Georgia Smith g.c.smith@stpeters.qld.edu.au as soon as possible for both trainings and games. Please ensure you are at the game 45 minutes beforehand due to majority of teams playing at away venues. Reminder that Years 7-9 students will be at Centenary High State High School Courts, except 7D and 8D, for more information please see the draw!

SQSRC ROWING NEWS

St Peters Boys Rowing crews had an extremely successful weekend at the South Queensland Schools Championship Regatta held at the Queensland State Rowing Centre, Wyaralong Dam, last weekend clinching nine (9) medals across the shed. Our Year 9 1st Quad also raced valiantly making final in both their quad and double scull boats. The weather was not helpful on Saturday with a stiff head breeze persistent throughout the day resulting in some small boat finals being moved to Sunday. Congratulations to the following athletes:

• Boys Year 10 Quad – Joshua W, Lucas C, Dheeraj C, Nima Ebrahimi G, Finn O’Brien (cox) – Bronze
• Boys Year 11 Double Scull -Flynn G and Sam M – Gold
• Boys Year 11 Four - Matt J, Flynn G, Sam M, Ted A and Dominic P (cox) – Silver
• Boys Open Quad - Matt J, Flynn G, Sam M, Ted A and Dominic P (cox) – Silver

The boys are just returning from a well-earned five week break since the SQSRC Trophy regatta and will commence training over the next couple of weeks for the Queensland Schools Championship Regatta (States) in Rockhampton from 14-16 September 2024.

The highlights of the weekend were the performances of the Boys Year 11 Four winning silver as this is the first time this crew have raced a sweep boat.

Inter-house track & Field

Next Wednesday 24 July will feature our Junior High Inter-House Track & Field day. Please ensure you wear your house shirt and are able to compete in a range of events for your house! All students are expected to attend and represent their house to the best of their ability. We look forward to seeing all students enjoying the last Inter-House Carnival of the year. Further information will be emailed to students early next week.

For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen sport, so they can improve and refine sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their team-mates.

If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.

Matchday expectations 

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniform items can be purchased from Shop45 or via School Locker, please refer to the website for opening hours. For matchdays enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or Crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

Basketball

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

At Games – All St Peters AIC Basketballers must be wearing:

• St Peters jersey
• St Peters maroon PE/sports shorts
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Rugby League

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

Training – students must wear their ‘Program Shirt’ to their training session.

Games – students are to arrive at their game wearing:

• St Peters ‘program shirt’ and then get changed into their jersey
• Mouthguard is mandatory
• Long maroon football socks
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Tennis

• Students to wear full PE uniform with tennis hat to games. First IV to wear the First uniform presented at the start of the season.

Track & Field

• Students to wear the Track & Field singlet to all meets

ST PETERS STUDENT SPECTATORS ON GAMEDAYS

Please note, dogs are not permitted on campus to accompany spectators to watch Football or Rugby fixtures (service dogs permitted).

Should any St Peters student be attending a St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that they are dressed in St Peters formal uniform. Should a student not be wearing the correct attire when attending a sporting event/game, they may be asked to leave the venue.
