Welcome to Term 3. A particularly warm welcome to those new students and their families joining St Peters this term. We hope that you settle in and feel part of our community very soon.
It may have been the mid-term break, however there was still plenty on offer for our young people. In some ways, St Peters never really stops. Pre-season training and camps for many of the Term 3 Sports were on offer. There was a highly successful Strings Tour of regional Queensland and the annual Year 10 Ski Trip to New Zealand. A number of students undertook their Adventurous Journey as part of our growing Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. My thanks to those staff involved who provided these opportunities for our young people. There was also a ‘Back to Ironbark’ Open Day which 300 people attended as part of our 50 year celebration of this iconic St Peters Program. Work on both the Campus Heart Phase 2 and the Chapel Rejuvenation Projects continued, both of which are nearing completion with an estimated early August opening.
Semester 1 Reports were made available over the break. They provide a snapshot of where your child is at in their learning journey. If you haven’t already done so, it is important that parents have conversations with their child/ren as to their progress. The start of the second semester provides students with the opportunity to take stock and establish their learning goals for the second half of the year. (Re)establishing good study and homework routines are crucial to the achievement of those learning goals. Consistent, focused effort in class is another key element if our young people are to achieve their goals.
As we embark on Term 3, I encourage the fine young people of St Peters to set their aspirations high and engage in purposeful endeavour with their studies and make the very most of the experiences afforded to them across the array of College life. They can do this by exhibiting and continuing to develop the St Peters Plus Ultra Mindset. Plus Ultra is a mindset that goes beyond traditional academic boundaries, encouraging students to not only excel in their studies, but also to explore diverse interests, to seek knowledge, leadership and growth opportunities. It is an abundance mindset that empowers our young people to go beyond what seems impossible – to discover what is possible; a mindset of discovery, empowerment, learning and growth.
My very best wishes to each of you for the term ahead. Plus Ultra. Ever Higher. More Beyond.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of a range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.
Psalm 23 – Aboriginal Style by Uncle Rev Ron Williams
My big fella boss up in the sky is like the father Emu.
He will always look after me and take me to green grass,
and lead me to where the water holes are
full and fresh all the time.
He leads me away from the thick scrub and helps me
keep safe from the hunters, dingoes and eagles.
At nighttime when I am very lonely and sad,
I will not be afraid,
for my Father covers me with his feathers
like a father emu.
His spear and shield will always protect me.
My big fella boss always give me a good feed
in the middle of my enemies.
In hot times he makes me sit down in a cool shade and rest.
He gives me plenty of love and care all of my life through.
Then I will live with my big fella boss like a father emu:
that cares for his chicks in good country, full of peace and safety
For evermore and evermore.
Prayer by Cameron Balcombe
Dear Creator,
We come before you with hearts filled with hope and determination. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this beautiful land, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and we thank you for their wisdom, resilience and knowledge.
We pray for healing in our nation, as we confront the injustices and disparities that have plagued our Indigenous brothers and sisters for too long. We pray for the health professionals who work tirelessly to Close the Gap, that they may be filled with compassion and understanding.
Guide us, Lord, in our journey towards reconciliation and true friendship. Help us to bridge the gap in cultural understanding and access to health services. Show us how we can each contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
We lift up those who feel hopeless, especially the families and communities affected by suicide. Bring them comfort, peace and help us to support and care for them in their grief. With the same hands, we also lift up the young people who are struggling, feeling lost or hopeless. May they find strengt, resilience and may we as a community offer them support and guidance towards a brighter future.
We also give thanks for the wisdom and resilience of our Elders, who have carried the stories and traditions of their people for generations. May they be filled with strength and courage as they continue to guide their communities, and may we learn from their teachings and wisdom.
May we be agents of your healing, Lord, working together to Close the Gap and build a better future for all Australians, especially our young people. Give us the wisdom to learn from the past, the courage to address the present, and the vision to create a future where all Australians stand together in equality and harmony.
In your name, we pray.
Amen.

Life Symposium 2 - Wednesday August 7 | 6:45pm - 8:15pm
Join us for an inspiring session with Dr Justin Coulson, renowned co-host and parenting expert on Channel Nine’s Parental Guidance. As the founder of happyfamilies.com.au and the author of nine best-selling books on raising resilient children, Justin is recognised as one of Australia’s most trusted authorities on parenting, relationships, and wellbeing.
We’ve all heard the news. A former Sydney schoolgirl. A petition. Literally thousands of stories of sexual assault. Non-consensual sexual encounters that are claimed to be common-place occurrences at parties for teens.
And our kids think it’s normal. They think it’s just how things are.
How are we supposed to talk to our children – our teenagers – about consent, respect, alcohol and other drugs, staying safe, and all of the risks they face? Between us not knowing what to say, or when or how to say it, and our kids not willing to hear it, we’re in a tough spot. But we have to have the conversations. We must. So where do we start?
Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s leading parenting experts and father to six daughters, has put together a presentation designed specifically for parents of high school students. In this session, you’ll hear:
What teenagers are getting up to in terms of alcohol, drugs, pornography, and sex;
Why they think they know everything (and why it’s so hard to teach them anything);
Simple ways to have the conversations your teenager needs to have in a way that invites them to want to listen;
The critical things every parent must do to reduce the risk that their child will be either a perpetrator or a victim of non-consensual sexual activity (assault).
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and tools to have those difficult conversations with your child/ren around sex, consent and staying safe. This is an event not to be missed.
All proceeds from the Symposium will be donated to a children’s charity.
This week, students from the College’s partner school in Germany, Laurentius Gymnasium, officially joined the campus community as they commenced lessons with their partner students in Years 10–12. Dani, Elena, Jannis, Josefine, Klara, Lotta, Salome and Sophie will be with their host students and families for six weeks this term, after their exchange partners from St Peters came to them last December-January, as part of the Germany Exchange Program.
For our students, it’s been great to welcome their overseas friends to the College and for the German students, it’s been a novel experience wearing a school uniform! We wish them and their hosts all the best for their Australian adventure.

I am delighted to welcome you to Semester 2. I look forward to a productive and happy semester with the students and staff, and to our continued partnership with you, the parents and caregivers, in the Primary Years.
Semester 2 always brings about some changes in the timetable for Upper Primary students. Years 5C and 5D will be introduced to MEBS, which is always a highlight, and several other changes for specialist days have also taken place.
We are delighted to welcome four new students and their families to the Primary Years this term and we look forward to integrating these families into our community.
This is a reminder of the upcoming ICAS tests and the Australian Mathematics Competition in Term 3. Additional information can be accessed via Firefly HERE.
Early Arrival
We have noticed that some Lower Primary students arrive at the College before 8:00am. As official supervision commences at 8:00am, we kindly request that students who arrive before this time (unless they are attending a supervised activity) make use of the Before School Care service. This ensures appropriate supervision and care for their wellbeing until regular school hours commence.
We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and understanding in following these expectations. Our primary goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students, and your support is essential in achieving this. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
NAIDOC Week
This week is NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, and on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
This protest was one of the first major civil rights gatherings in the world and was known as the 'Day of Mourning'. This later became 'Aborigines Day', and in 1955, it was decided that it should become a positive celebration of Aboriginal culture, heritage and achievement, rather than a protest.
Today, celebrations consist of a range of traditional and contemporary activities. There are many gatherings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people coming together to celebrate and share with non-Aboriginal people the strengths of its First Nations People. This important event helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, enabling a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future.
St Peters' Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Vision reflects the College’s commitment to a reconciled Australia, as we strive to foster a culture that honours and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We seek to establish genuine and meaningful opportunities that deepen knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the diversity of our First Nations peoples, traditions, histories and continuing contributions across Australia, and their unique place as part of our shared national identity.

Junior High
Semester 2 in Junior High
Welcome to the start of Semester 2 – for what will undoubtedly be another busy period for our students and staff. Please find below important updates from each year level.
YEAR 7
At the end of Term 2, the Year 7 students enjoyed the 'Fun and Friendship' Camp at Luther Heights aimed at developing positive relationships within the cohort. Students were challenged by a range of outdoor team-building activities and showed their capacity to work together to overcome problems. Nighttime activities were enjoyed by students and staff alike. It was pleasing to see new friendships formed, and existing friendships strengthened by the camp experience. Overall, the camp was a rewarding and fun end to a big semester for the Year 7 students.
This term, Year 7 students are encouraged to continue to build on the friendships they made at camp. We also encourage Year 7 students to continue to develop good study habits, putting in place the materials used last semester. Friendship activities and study skills will continue to be covered during form lessons throughout the semester.
YEAR 8
The Year 8 cohort is currently enjoying the 'Greatness Lies Within' Camp at Mapleton. Students left the College excited and eagerly anticipating the challenges and experiences of the camp. This camp aims to develop cultural awareness, leadership, teamwork, communication and individual confidence.
Later this term, the Year 8 cohort will engage in a wellbeing seminar called 'Setting Healthy Habits for Life'. More information will be provided to students closer to the time and activities will be provided in form class following the seminar to help students continue to build on the lessons covered in the session.
YEAR 9
With our third group of Year 9 students heading off to Ironbark this week, we are now halfway through this cohort experiencing their Ironbark journey. Students from the first groups have shared with their peers the opportunities, fun and challenges they experienced in their five-week program and it has been a pleasure to note the individual growth and strengthened friendships shared by returning students.
Students are reminded that Semester 2 subject changes (electives) need to be made by the end of week two via the subject change email address (subjectchanges@stpeters.qld.edu.au). Due to class capacity, students are encouraged to also nominate alternative preferences if they are requesting a subject change. In the next couple of weeks, Year 9 students who need support with engagement in various classes will have an opportunity to meet with Mr Higgins (Year Level Coordinator) or their form class teacher to plan for the semester ahead.
STAFF UPDATES
We thank Mr Damian Woods and Mr Michael O’Loughlin who covered Mr James Ceccato’s classes while he was on Long Service Leave in Term 2. Mr Ceccato has now returned to his 7J Form Class and his Science and Maths classes.

A Music Tale - All Strings Concert
Music Tale 2024, 'A Midsummer Nightmare,' showcased the incredible talents of 350 St Peters string players, accompanied by three Drama students. The storyline followed Peter (Josh S) as he navigated a mysterious world ruled by the Erlking (Josh C), with the aid of the fairy Robin (Delilah B). The combination of captivating storytelling, stunning visuals, and remarkable music made the night a resounding success. A heartfelt thank you to all the students who contributed to this exceptional production.

At the end of Semester 1, our choirs celebrated the natural world with Earth Song. Featuring 10 choirs from Years 1 to 12, the concert included pieces like 'Mother Earth' and 'Uluru' by Harley Mead, 'Bring Me Little Water, Sylvie' attributed to Huddie Ledbetter, and 'What a Wonderful World' arranged by Mark Hayes. The evening concluded with a breathtaking massed choral performance by nearly 400 choristers. Congratulations to all performers and a special thanks to the instrumental accompanists.
Music From the Stage and Screen - All Bands Concert
Our bands delivered an unforgettable performance of iconic movie music, including pieces from Hunger Games, How to Train Your Dragon, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The event began with an outdoor concert in the PAC Amphitheatre and continued in the Dron Auditorium, enhanced by eye-catching visuals. It was a delightful afternoon celebrating the magic of movie music.

Rowing
The BSRA (Girls) Rowing Camp took place for five days in the final week of the holidays. The girls travelled to Bundaberg Rowing Club in Bucca and completed an action-packed week starting with scull trials to finalise crew selections.
All the crews will race for St Peters in the BSRA Regatta season that commences on Saturday 20 July and concludes with Head of the River on Saturday 24 August. The girls trained two-three sessions per day, both on the water and some land training sessions during the week developing their technique and crew combinations to maximise their boat speed ahead of the first regatta.
There was also plenty of down time when the girls would hang out making bead bracelets, writing each other ‘warm & fuzzy’ notes and enjoying each other’s company. We held the Inaugural St Peters Rowing ‘Quadathlon’ where teams of girls competed against each other in a combined swim, bike, ergo, run race (each team member doing a leg). We held our ‘Minute to win it’ Games Night and our final night we held our ‘No Talent’ night where the girls dressed up to the theme ‘X’ in their year level groups.
The last morning at camp saw all crews take to the water in an Omnium regatta (handicapped starts) the final race of which had the 1st VIII take on the Coaches VIII for a 500m sprint. The Coaches took line honours and were very happy with themselves. All the hard work was complemented by a wonderful camaraderie – the Junior Shed got to know the Senior Shed girls much better, and we came together as a team ready to take on all the other schools in the BSRA.
Our 1st and 2nd crews commence their racing season this weekend at the South Queensland Schools Regatta this weekend at Wyaralong before kicking off their BSRA racing season the following week. We wish the girls luck as they take on the best in our region.
