NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities and is a great opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

Mother Son Breakfast – Wednesday 23 July 2025
What happens when you buy a one-way ticket to Africa with no set plan? For St Peters Old Scholar Will Szalay (2014), it sparked a transformational journey of curiosity, courage, and calling.
At this year’s Mother Son Breakfast, Will will share his remarkable adventure of living and working in remote Ghanaian communities for over two years, navigating unexpected challenges, and discovering a sense of purpose along the way.
Will's story is about stepping into the unknown and the impact that can have, not just on yourself but on the lives of others.
We encourage all mothers and sons to attend this special event.
IB in Action: Year 11 Language and Literature Explorations
In IB Language and Literature, students engage with a diverse selection of literary and non-literary texts, all linked to the IB’s core concepts for the course: identity, perspective, representation, communication, culture, creativity, and transformation.
This term, Year 11 students examined the work of Italian street artist Blu, using his murals as a springboard to explore key concepts and inquiry questions, such as:
How may artists use their work to represent or reinterpret different perspectives?
How is street art used as a creative medium to communicate social issues?
What is the role of the audience in street art, and why is this significant?
Through this exploration, students considered how art and other visual texts can function as a form of social commentary—shedding light on social, political, economic and environmental concerns. Students completed their initial inquiries in their Learner Portfolios and then worked collaboratively to develop interpretations and share their work. Experiences throughout this unit challenged students to think critically about the role of visual texts as means for social change and deepened their understanding of how communication is shaped by both context and audience.
Interested in learning more about the IB? Prospective students can visit our ‘IB Q&A Cafe’ on Mondays over lunch in the CLI. Interested parents can contact Cassandra Magar, IB Coordinator, at c.magar@stpeters.qld.edu.au.

Celebrating a Remarkable Term in the Primary Years
As we come to the close of another rewarding Term, it’s a wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on the many achievements, experiences and moments of joy that have defined learning and life in the Primary Years.
From the first days of Term 2, our students embraced every opportunity to grow, learn and connect. Our Cross Country meets and Track & Field Carnivals were filled with energy, teamwork and personal bests, as students from across the Primary Years ran, jumped and threw with courage and determination. It was a joy to see so many of our young athletes supporting one another and proudly representing their Houses.
Our community gathered once again for the much-loved Mother’s Day Breakfast, a heartwarming event that honoured the incredible role mothers and mother-figures play in the lives of our students. Thank you to all who joined us for this special morning and Chapel.
Under 8’s Day brought colour, creativity and community spirit to campus, as our youngest learners explored hands-on activities and celebrated the wonder of early childhood. This year’s theme, “Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play,” inspired children to investigate, experiment and discover through joyful, curiosity-driven experiences.
In the classroom, students have been deeply engaged in rigorous and thought-provoking Units of Inquiry, developing critical thinking skills and making meaningful connections across Subject areas. The strength of the Primary Years Programme lies in its ability to foster both curiosity and depth—and this Term has been no exception.
Our Year 6 students experienced a highlight of their final Primary Year with the much-anticipated Canberra Tour, exploring our nation’s capital and engaging deeply with their Civics and Citizenship learning. This memorable trip was rich in experience, independence and learning beyond the classroom.
Academic enrichment was on proud display with our students’ exceptional performance in the Da Vinci Decathlon, where they worked collaboratively to solve complex problems and think laterally across a range of disciplines. Their success is a testament to their creativity, teamwork and determination.
The Arts have continued to flourish this Term, with students sharing their gifts during a series of inspiring Music concerts. Whether performing on stage for the first time or as seasoned ensemble members, our students demonstrated both skill and confidence, supported by our dedicated Music staff.
Our values of service and compassion were powerfully lived out during the Walk My Way fundraiser, as students walked with purpose to raise awareness and support for displaced children around the world. It was inspiring to see our community rally together for such a meaningful cause.
As we look ahead to the holidays, teachers are finalising Semester 1 reports, which will provide a valuable overview of each student’s progress, effort and areas for growth. We are proud of how hard our students have worked this Semester, and we thank our families for your continued partnership in their learning journey.
Thank you for being part of such a vibrant and caring community. We wish you a safe and restful break and look forward to an exciting Semester 2.

Camps and Term 2 Highlights
As Term 2 draws to a close, it has been wonderful to see Junior High students embracing every aspect of life at St Peters. From concerts and Sport, to Kaleidoscope and busy assessment schedules, students have given their best and supported one another.
This week, our Year 7 students head off to camp, marking a key moment in their journey as they build friendships and confidence outside the classroom.
Looking ahead, our Year 8 camp will take place in the first week of Term 3. This outdoor education experience is central to the ethos of our College, encouraging resilience, teamwork and growth. We look forward to starting the term with such a valuable opportunity for our students.

Visual Arts News
As Semester 1 draws to a close, Visual Arts students are celebrating the outcomes of some inspiring projects. Year 9 Tradigital Art students have installed their sculptures in the gardens around the Chandler Arts Centre in response to the natural environment. These abstract forms, crafted from recycled plastics and zip ties, create striking contrasts with the landscape, filling spaces and highlighting the inherent structures and beauty of nature.
The life drawing series with guest artist Maureen Hansen has produced confident and sophisticated figure studies. The students’ commitment to this challenging program over the Term has resulted in a strong collection of well-developed figure studies.
We look forward to Semester 2, with more opportunities for creative exploration and innovation across our Visual Arts programs.

FTC Teams Compete at Rookie Robotics Challenge
On the weekend, three of our St Peters FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams took part in the inaugural QLD FTC Rookie Challenge, hosted at Grace College. This event was designed to give valuable drive time and match experience to newer team members. A key rule of the competition was that each drive team had to include at least one rookie in every match, ensuring hands-on opportunities for all participants.
We are thrilled to announce that two of our teams, #11505 Flaming Galahs and #11505 Flaming Tacos, were part of the winning alliance—an impressive result that reflects their teamwork and adaptability.
A big congratulations also goes to #25827 Flaming Marshmallows, who showed determination and persistence throughout the day, working continuously to improve their robot and their performance.
This event was a fantastic opportunity for our rookie members to build confidence, develop skills, and strengthen team dynamics as we continue the FTC season.
