Good food, limitless pleasure and life without end.

That is what Odysseus experienced on the island of Ogygia with the nymph Calypso, if you have seen The Odyssey or read Homer’s classic story.

In this ancient Greek epic, Odysseus is trying to return home after the Trojan War. Ten years have passed, and he still has not made it back to Ithaca. His wife, Penelope, waits faithfully for him while 108 suitors compete for her attention. Time is running out for Odysseus to return home.

During his arduous journey, Odysseus encounters the beautiful nymph Calypso. In ancient literature, nymphs are often portrayed as captivating young women who embody the powers of nature.

Odysseus falls under Calypso’s spell and remains on her island for seven years. She prevents him from returning home and even offers him immortality if he will stay and marry her.

But Odysseus chooses to leave. 

He chooses to leave 'Love Island'. 

The island offers everything he could desire: Intimacy. Companionship. Abundant food. Everlasting life. Paradise. Yet Odysseus cannot stay. He feels compelled to return home to his wife, his son and the responsibilities that await him. As enticing as this artificial paradise is, he knows he must return to his calling.

This scene from The Odyssey provides a powerful illustration of the world our students live in today. They are surrounded by multi-billion-dollar companies that constantly compete for their attention, offering stimulation, entertainment, convenience and comfort at every turn. The promise is simple: a life with less struggle and more ease.

Yet every child and young person needs opportunities to experience challenge, tension, responsibility and even hardship. These experiences help shape resilience, character and purpose. They learn not only how to resist the lure of constant comfort, but also how to pursue the calling God has placed before them.

Odysseus is far from a perfect hero. Nevertheless, his decision to leave the island and continue his journey is an example worth considering.

The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 5:3–5: 'We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit'.

As we live in a world of constant enticements and easy comforts, may we embrace the opportunities God gives us to grow in perseverance, character and hope, and faithfully pursue the calling he has placed before us.

Walk My Way Brisbane

Members of the St Peters community are invited to join the St Peters Springfield Team for Walk My Way Brisbane and help protect refugee girls from child marriage.
The most effective way to prevent child marriage is to help girls stay in school. Every step you take and every dollar you raise makes a meaningful difference.

Your impact

$100 can provide a refugee girl with school materials, a uniform and access to a school feeding program.
$450 can help train a refugee to become a teacher.

On Wednesday 26 August from 4:45pm - 6:00pm, St Peters Springfield will be hosting a Twilight Tour for prospective families across Primary and Secondary Years.

Guests will enjoy a guided tour of the campus, connect with staff and students, and gain insight into the St Peters Springfield experience and our approach to learning. This is a wonderful opportunity for prospective families to experience our vibrant and welcoming community firsthand.

This tour is suitable for families considering enrolment across all year levels. We encourage our current families to share this opportunity with friends and extended family who may be exploring schooling options and interested in joining the St Peters Springfield community.

Registrations open from 4:45pm, with tours commencing at 5:00pm.

To celebrate Book Week 2026, the St Peters Springfield P&F Committee is proud to support our Primary Years Disco on Friday 28 August, giving Prep to Year 6 students the opportunity to dress as their favourite book character and enjoy an afternoon of music, dancing and fun with friends.

Yesterday, we celebrated the appointment of our Year 9 Junior High Portfolio Assistants.

Following their growth and development through the transformative Ironbark experience, Year 9 students were invited to apply for a Portfolio Assistant position. Designed to build on the leadership qualities fostered during Ironbark, the program provides students with an authentic opportunity to develop their skills while working alongside our Year 12 Leadership Team.

The selection process reflected the significance of these appointments. Students submitted a written application outlining their interest in leadership and the portfolio they wished to represent. Applications were then considered alongside feedback from College staff, Ironbark staff and student voting, ensuring the final appointments reflected not only each student's aspirations but also the confidence their peers and teachers have in their ability to lead.

To provide opportunities for as many students as possible, appointments were made across two rounds. The first group of Portfolio Assistants was selected at the conclusion of Term 1, with a second intake appointed at the end of Term 2, resulting in a total of 18 Year 9 students joining the team.

The Portfolio Assistant roles have been established to strengthen the College's existing leadership model by creating a clear pathway for younger students to develop leadership capabilities before progressing into senior leadership positions. Each Portfolio Assistant has been partnered with one of the College's Year 12 Portfolio Captains, where they will contribute to initiatives, events and projects within their elected portfolio throughout the year.

Acting as the voice of the Junior High student body, Portfolio Assistants will provide valuable input into College initiatives while building strong connections between year levels. Working alongside their senior mentors, they will gain practical experience in collaboration, communication, organisation and servant leadership.

Above all, these students are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the College's values of Care, Dignity and Respect in everything they do while helping foster a culture of belonging, service and community across St Peters Springfield.

For Year 10 student Miley V, entrepreneurship is more than just an interest. It's a passion that has been shaped by her family's business experience and a desire to continually expand her knowledge.

last Term, Miley was recognised with the GRIT Award during St Peters' IGNITE program, which challenges students to identify real-world problems, develop innovative solutions and build entrepreneurial thinking. Continuing to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom, Miley recently attended the four-day Empire Mastery business intensive led by Australian entrepreneur Aaron Sansoni.

Miley's interest in entrepreneurship began at home, where she has watched her parents grow their businesses.

Miley said hearing Aaron Sansoni's personal journey was one of the highlights of the experience.

Looking ahead, Miley already has ambitious goals for the future.

Her long-term vision is equally ambitious.

For students considering a similar path, Miley encourages them to back themselves and embrace every opportunity to learn.

St Peters Springfield provides a range of opportunities for students interested in entrepreneurship and business. Students can begin exploring entrepreneurial thinking through the Entrepreneurship elective in Years 8 and 9, including the popular Market Day initiative, before participating in the IGNITE program in Year 10. As students progress through Senior School, they can further develop their knowledge through Business and Economics electives in Year 10, Business and Economics subjects in Years 11 and 12, or the Diploma of Business, equipping them with practical skills for future study, employment or launching their own ventures.

A reminder that students are to be collected from Kiss n’ Go fifteen minutes after a rehearsal concludes.  Both the Secondary and Primary Drama Troupes commenced rehearsals last week.
Note that Cantabile Strings now have one rehearsal a week on a Friday 7:10am-8:10am in PA1.  All students are expected to attend.
Pizzicato Strings rehearsals have ceased until further notice. 
Con Brio Choir has had a great start to the term working with Mrs Carleen Steele.  New members are always welcome.  Refer to the rehearsal schedule for rehearsal times.

Lutheran Soccer & Netball Gala Day

On Tuesday, students in Years 3 to 6 proudly represented St Peters Springfield at the Primary Lutheran Soccer & Netball Gala Day, joining teams from Bethany Lutheran College, Prince of Peace Lutheran College, Living Faith Lutheran College and Redeemer Lutheran College for a day of spirited competition and sportsmanship. Our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, determination and resilience across both sports, achieving some fantastic results:

• Year 3/4 Soccer team were crowned Junior Division Champions.

• Year 5/6 Netball team claimed the Senior Division title following a series of impressive performances. 

• Year 3/4 A Netball team progressed through to the Grand Final, finishing as runners-up after a closely contested match.

Congratulations to all students who represented St Peters Springfield with pride. Their teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship were a wonderful reflection of our College values, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.

GBC Track & Field Championships 

The GBC Track & Field Championships are fast approaching and will be held on Monday, 31 August. Students selected as part of the Championship squad will be notified via email this week. A final event list will be communicated to families prior to the competition. Final team selections will be based on recent Inter-House Athletics performances, including recorded times and results, as well as training attendance and commitment throughout the preparation period. All selected students are strongly encouraged to attend training sessions on Monday and/or Wednesday mornings, particularly if they are not currently training with an external club or program. Regular attendance will help ensure athletes are well prepared to perform at their best on the day.
