Career education is an important and valued part of our students’ educational journey here at St Peters Springfield. Through both explicit and implicit activities, we aim to help our students discover the pathways that align with their skills and interests.
National Careers Week is here, and it is the perfect opportunity for students to start thinking about their future. Whether dreaming of becoming a doctor, an artist, an engineer, or an entrepreneur, Careers Week is designed to help students explore options and discover the paths that can get them there.
On Wednesday morning, our Secondary Years took part in career activities as part of our CDR (Care, Dignity, Respect) program. These activities involved talks, emerging trends, and interactive workshops. It is our hope that there will be time for our students to reflect—whether they’re in Year 7 just starting to think about the world of work or in Year 12 preparing to take the next big step.
Why It Matters
National Careers Week highlights how your interests, skills, and subjects connect to real-world careers. It’s a chance to ask questions, talk, and network with role models, and understand how to shape your own journey. Knowing your options early helps you make informed decisions about subject choices, apprenticeships, further education, and more.
What’s Happening at St Peters Springfield?
Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up this week:
CV and Employment Workshops: Learn how to craft a standout CV and ace your future job interviews.
Subject Spotlight: See how subjects like Maths, Art, Science, and Technology are linked to real careers.
Looking Ahead: Futures and SET Planning
As we celebrate National Careers Week, we’re also gearing up for two important upcoming initiatives:
Year 12 Futures Planning: In the coming Term, we will begin Futures Planning for our Year 12 students, helping them navigate the crucial decisions as they prepare for life after school. Whether it's university, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce, this is an exciting time to start shaping their post-school journey.
Year 10 SET Planning: For our Year 10 students, we will begin Senior Education and Training (SET) Planning at the beginning of Term 3. This is a key opportunity for students and their families to engage in pathway planning and explore the future direction of their studies. SET Planning allows parents to work closely with their children to discuss potential career paths, subject choices, and personal goals.
What Can Parents Do?
Parents play a vital role in the career decisions of our young people. Engaging in open dialogue about your own work and views can be helpful for our children to figure out if the same passions ignite their curiosity. This week presents a great opportunity also for Primary Years parents and families to get involved. One fun and practical activity is to have a conversation about the various jobs that might be available in the future. For example, parents and grandparents could chat about the jobs they have done in the past and reflect on those people may need to do in the coming decades, which can spark curiosity in young children about how the world of work evolves.
Top Tip for Parents: Help engage your students in dialogue but try to remain unbiased in your feedback as your young people talk about jobs they may enjoy. While it can be helpful for parents to pass on knowledge and experiences about the careers you think they may enjoy – it can also set them up to feel pressured to make decisions that don't suit their natural abilities or interests. Their careers will be much more enjoyable and successful if they make meaningful and personal decisions and they will lead happier lives if they are working in jobs that feel authentic to them. Remember that this generation will most likely work well into their 60s and 70s, and they will have on average eight different career changes, half of which roles have not been invented yet.
Top Tip for Students: Keep an open mind. Try and find the passion that ignites you! There are careers out there you’ve never heard of—yet.

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
If there’s one word that doesn’t get enough airtime in the deluge of news and information we are swamped with daily, it’s ‘hope’. In fact, if you watch enough news, or even just a little, it’s easy to lose hope. There are wars, famines, natural disasters — the list goes on. Hopelessness rather than hope, seems to be the reality we are living in.
And then we have this verse from Romans 15, highlighting hope, joy, and peace — words we usually associate with Christmas time, not the daily grind. But the reality is that God wants us to experience hope, joy, and peace daily, in all the messiness and at times apparent hopelessness of life. Every day, not just once a year, and in all that life throws at us, not just in the good times.
As a teenager, I found a copy of The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom on my parents’ bookshelf, started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I was transfixed by the story of Corrie and her family, hiding Jews during the Second World War and risking their lives for others. Corrie and her family were imprisoned for what they did, but Corrie survived her time in prisons and concentration camps and spent the remainder of her life travelling the globe and preaching the gospel. For someone who had seen and experienced so much suffering, she still had a message of hope that she wanted the world to hear.
One of my favourite Corrie quotes is this one: “If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. If you look at God, you’ll be at rest.”
Corrie had seen and experienced the very worst of the world. She knew that looking at the world or looking within didn’t provide her with hope, joy, or peace. It was only when she looked up and out — to God and his presence in the world and her life, that she could rest and have peace. The kind of peace written about in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
I don’t have to look far to see hope in the world, to see peacemakers at work, to see joy. It’s not usually in the news, but it is woven through our curriculum and embedded in our culture. Last week I saw hope in the faces of Old Scholars and congregation members, as they talked with 9D students who hosted them for morning tea as part of their Christian Studies Service Learning unit. I witnessed peacemakers at work when our Social Justice committee participated in a recent Amnesty International conference about refugees. I saw joy on the faces of students and staff as they connected and walked around QUT, South Bank, and the city for the Australian Lutheran World Service Walk My Way on the weekend.
Every day, in different ways, our young people are learning about themselves and the world around them, and they are hearing of a God who loves them, who has created them and who has gifted them to live purposeful lives. A God of hope, joy and peace, for all of us, today and every day.

ICAS Competition
Within our College community, there are students who shine brightly, displaying exemplary dedication and Academic talent. They deserve to be recognised. This year we are giving students the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their talents in the ICAS Competition.
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online Academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. This year, St Peters Lutheran College Springfield will offer students in Years 2 - 10 competition access in English, Mathematics and Science.
ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's Academic journey.
Every student who participates in ICAS is celebrated with a printed certificate, and an online results report to track development each year. Top performers are eligible for one of the highly coveted ICAS medals.
Your child’s ICAS certificates will show their results and the login details, “TAP ID and Pin”. You will use these to enter the ICAS Results Portal: https://orti.icasassessments.com/ortiStudent

Under 8s Day – A Joyful Celebration of Curiosity and Creativity
Our College was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated Under 8s Day, an annual highlight that brings play, wonder and hands-on discovery to life for our youngest learners.
This year’s theme centred around "Unleashing Scientific Thinking through Play!", and our students certainly did just that as they explored a range of engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and imagination.
A standout favourite was Street Science, where students were treated to explosive demonstrations and interactive experiments that turned scientific concepts into jaw-dropping fun. Making snow was a highlight for many of the students. In the LEGO zone, creativity was in full swing as children engineered imaginative structures, collaborated with peers, and let their problem-solving skills shine. Mrs Meera Honan from the Springfield City Group encouraged the students to create their ideal city.
Adding to the fun was our Police Dress-Up Station, where students could step into the shoes of community helpers and learn about the important role police officers play in keeping us safe. The excitement reached new heights with a visit from the Camira Fire Truck, giving children the chance to explore real firefighting equipment and chat with firefighters about their heroic work.
Our Healthy Food Station, run by the University of Queensland (UQ) Springfield Health Hub, encouraged students to think about nutritious choices, with hands-on food prep, colourful snacks, and conversations about how food fuels our growing bodies and minds.
AFL and Basketball certainly kept the students' bodies moving and lots of fun was had.
Events like Under 8s Day highlight the importance of play in early childhood education. Through laughter, exploration, and imagination, our students developed their social skills, critical thinking and a genuine love of learning.

Year 6 Inaugural Leadership Dinner
Recently we marked a significant milestone for St Peters Lutheran College Springfield as we hosted our very first Year 6 Leadership Dinner. The event was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the dedication, commitment, and achievements of our Student Leaders.
Throughout the evening, our Student Leaders proudly received their leadership badges, signifying their commitment to serving our College community with integrity and a sense of responsibility. At St Peters Springfield, all Year 6 students are leaders of the Primary Years, demonstrating initiative and care as they take on various formal roles. These roles include raising and lowering the flags, running Assemblies and Chapels, and building positive connections through lunchtime buddy programs with our Prep and Year 1 students. We also formally acknowledged our House and Arts Captains, who were chosen by their peers for their ability to inspire and support others.
The pride and enthusiasm shown by our leaders on the night truly captured the spirit of our College. As we look ahead, we are confident that this inaugural event has laid a strong foundation for celebrating leadership at St Peters Springfield. Congratulations to all our Student Leaders, you continue to make us proud!

Year 9 Leadership
Last Tuesday, we saw the appointment of our inaugural Junior High Portfolio Assistants.
Following on from the students’ growth and development at Ironbark, Year 9 students were invited to apply to be a Portfolio Assistant. Following a rigorous application process, 18 students were selected. The Portfolio Assistant roles were created to grow the students’ leadership skills and strengthen the College’s existing leadership model.
The Portfolio Assistants will be responsible to assisting the Year 12 Leadership Team in their elected portfolio group. These students will act as the student voice for Junior High student-body in their respective portfolio groups. Leading by example, the Portfolio Assistants will be expected to uphold the College’s core values; Care, Dignity and Respect, and continue to build a culture of connection and belonging within the College.

Captains Report
Last week was Round 2 of the Term 2 season, with our boys taking on Marist College in a strong set of matchups. Despite a dominant display from Marist Rugby, our boys fought hard with a very strong second half, scoring a try, only keeping Marist to one as well, but ultimately went down 31-7 in a physical contest. The Football boys also put in a solid effort, showing us what’s to come for Iona next week. With two unfortunate early goals, the boys needed to put up a fight, but with minimal shots taken, the game ended in a 2-0 loss. Despite the results not going our way in the field sports, our teams showed great spirit and determination. The standout performance of the round came from our Chess team, who dominated Marist with an impressive 15-1 victory. With Round 2 being the chess team’s focus round, it was great to see their preparation and dedication pay off in such a convincing win. Their teamwork, strategy, and composure set the tone for what promises to be a strong season ahead. Congratulations to all teams for their efforts and sportsmanship.
Football
First XI Coach Gabor Ganczer shared his thoughts after a tough match against Marist College:
Well done to the team on a great tactical adaptation against last year’s Premiers. Keeping them to a 0-0 half is a great indicator of what we are made of this year. Nothing else but two short concentration glitches resulted in Marist’s goals in the first half, but we learned from them. Next week's match against Iona College will be a good test to show what we can do in attack.
Chess
St Peters secured a strong win in Round 2 of the AIC Chess competition against Marist College, which also served as our Focus Round for the season. Our secondary students represented the College with determination and pride across all year levels.
Each match was a test of strategy and composure, and our players rose to the challenge with skill and focus. The coaches were particularly pleased with the growth in tactical thinking and the disciplined approach shown throughout the afternoon.
Beyond the results, it was the sportsmanship and respect displayed—both in victory and in close games—that truly reflected the spirit of St Peters. Congratulations to all players on a successful round and thank you to the families who came to support the team
This week marks their first away game against Iona College. Students will leave class at 2:30pm to travel by bus to Iona. A reminder that formal uniform is required for departure. Best of luck to the team!
Cross country
Unfortunately, our first Cross Country meet was cancelled due to wet weather. The second meet will take place on Wednesday 21 May at Curlew Park. Students involved in the meet will depart from the internal bus bay at 2:40pm.

All students involved are strongly encouraged to attend as many meets as possible.
Rowing
Congratulations to our boys on an outstanding first SQSARC Regatta last weekend at Wyaralong Dam.
The Year 9 crews impressed with a dominant 1st place finish in Division 1 of the Schoolboys Quad Scull (Coxed), alongside a 3rd place by another crew in the same division. Other crews also demonstrated determination and gained valuable race experience.
Senior crews continued the strong results, with a convincing 1st place in the Schoolboys Quad Scull Final and additional placings in 3rd and 5th, highlighting the squad’s depth and competitive edge.
Year 8 teams made a promising debut, with one crew placing 3rd in their first race, showing great potential for the future.
The Year 10 crews capped off the day with a commanding win in their final, alongside 3rd and 4th place finishes, showcasing strength across the squad and excitement for upcoming races.
