Beyond the Frame: Experiencing the Power of Visual Arts at St Peters Springfield
At St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, we believe that Arts education is not merely an extracurricular activity, but a vital cornerstone of a holistic education. As Head of Learning and Innovation, I witness daily the profound impact that engaging with the Arts, particularly Visual Arts, has on our students from their earliest years in Primary School through to their graduating moments in the Secondary Years.
Our recent excursions to the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) beautifully illustrate this continuum of learning. For our Year 5 students, this immersive experience, connected to their transdisciplinary unit ‘How We Express Ourselves,’ and provided a tangible understanding of how artists use diverse media and symbolism to convey powerful messages. Their open-minded exploration and thoughtful reflections were ignited by the rich tapestry of artistic expression on display. The visit was further enriched by the insightful engagement of Mr Kirkham, our Secondary Years Visual Arts teacher, who bridged the Primary Years and Secondary Years worlds by sharing and discussing the imaginative surreal symbolism found in Year 8 and Year 9 acrylic paintings. This early exposure fosters an appreciation for the sophisticated artistic explorations that await our learners.
This journey of artistic inquiry deepens in Secondary School. Our Year 11 and Year 12 Visual Art students recently navigated the complexities of contemporary art at GOMA’s Asia Pacific Triennial. They delved into how artists utilise personal and cultural symbols as potent allegories, sparking deep conversations and fuelling their individual creative pursuits. Inspired by this experience, our Year 11 students are currently exploring the theme of how symbols reflect the passage of time. This exploration is beautifully captured in photography work by Bella P, depicting an hourglass, and an evocative cricket bat embroidery piece by Riley Z. These works, alongside the insightful ink work with a striking red moon from Daniela A's IA1 and the delicate watercolour piece from Angel's IA1, showcase the students' thoughtful engagement with symbolic representation. For our Year 12 students, the Asia Pacific Triennial served as a catalyst to further enrich their developing bodies of work, igniting their creative fire and expanding their artistic horizons.
These experiences underscore the coherence of our Visual Arts program. From the foundational exploration of symbolism in the Primary Years to the nuanced understanding of cultural allegories in the Secondary Years, students at St Peters are provided with incredible opportunities to develop their visual literacy, critical thinking, and creative expression. The Arts empower them to be open-minded thinkers, reflective learners, and confident risk-takers, skills that extend far beyond the art studio. We are immensely proud of the vibrant artistic community thriving at St Peters.

Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) – Walk My Way
"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."
Isaiah 43:19
This weekend, hundreds of people—including many St Peters staff and students—will be stepping out to support the work of Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) through their event Walk My Way. ALWS is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and aims to raise funds to help 75,000 children access the essentials for a happy and healthy life, including food, education, and safety around the world.
While Easter Day has come and gone, in the Christian calendar, the season of Easter lasts for several weeks, reflecting the time Jesus spent on earth after His resurrection and before His ascension into heaven. This season is a reminder that there is still much for us to do here on earth—people with whom to share the good news of Jesus’s death and resurrection, places into which to shine the light of love, and opportunities to help bring the new life that Jesus has won for us.
So it seems fitting that ALWS chose the Easter season to hold Walk My Way, an event that reaches out to and serves those in need of new life. In His ministry, Jesus constantly showed people that even when the worst things happened, God was present—unchangeably loving—and at work to bring about new life, either here or in eternity.
This wisdom is deeply known by our Indigenous sisters and brothers, who understand that fire is not the end, but rather a new beginning, and that growth and life can emerge on the far side of suffering. Whatever ‘deaths’ people may face—poverty, illness, social isolation, or even their own mortality—these are the very places where God is present, waiting to bring new life.
In May 2024, the path from Gardens Point to South Bank and back became a sea of blue as more than 700 walkers, runners, and participants set out together. Collectively, we raised nearly $200,000 to help rebuild homes in war-torn Ukraine. That’s a tremendous amount of life and love being poured into a shattered community.
Where is there a need for new life in your own life, or in the lives of those around you? What gifts and talents could you offer to spread God’s love into those spaces? God is always doing new things in the world, and by God’s grace, we are invited to join in bringing about a better world.
May God use this continuing season of Easter to bring new life to you, and through you to those around. And may God cause the wildernesses and wastelands around you to bring forth unexpected things.

ICAS Competition
ICAS Competition
Within our College community, there are students who shine brightly, displaying exemplary dedication and Academic talent. They deserve to be recognised. This year we are giving students the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their talents in the ICAS Competition.
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online Academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. This year, St Peters Lutheran College Springfield will offer students in Years 2 - 10 competition access in English, Mathematics and Science.
ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's Academic journey.
Every student who participates in ICAS is celebrated with a printed certificate, and an online results report to track development each year. Top performers are eligible for one of the highly coveted ICAS medals.
Your child’s ICAS certificates will show their results and the login details, “TAP ID and Pin”. You will use these to enter the ICAS Results Portal: https://orti.icasassessments.com/ortiStudent

St Helena Visit
Last week, our Year 4 classes went on a very exciting excursion to St Helena Island, which is located in Moreton Bay, just off the coast of Brisbane. We travelled there by boat, which was a fun experience all by itself! The ride was smooth, and we loved watching the island come into view, getting bigger and clearer as the boat got closer.
When we arrived on the island, our tour guides who told us about the island’s fascinating past. St Helena Island used to be a prison more than 100 years ago. It was one of Queensland’s first prisons, and many prisoners were sent there to work. They had to build buildings, grow food, and even make their own clothes. Some prisoners were treated very harshly, and life on the island was very hard for them.
We saw the old prison ruins, including cells, the blacksmith's workshop, and the stone walls built by the prisoners. Our guide told us some interesting stories about prisoners who tried to escape but were caught or even eaten by sharks! We were surprised to learn that the prison officers lived with their families on the island too.
As we walked around, we noticed how peaceful and beautiful the island is today, with open grass fields, birds singing, and amazing views of the ocean. It was hard to believe that it was once a place of punishment and hard work.
We also learned about the First Nations people who used the island before the prison was built. It was important to remember that Aboriginal people lived on and cared for this land long before European settlement.
This visit helped us better understand and made us think about how life was so different in the past. We enjoyed exploring, asking questions, and imagining what it would have been like to live on St Helena Island back then.

Friendship Day
Our Primary Years recently hosted its very first Friendship Day, a heartwarming celebration of kindness, connection, and community.
Led by our enthusiastic Year 6 Student Leaders, the day featured a variety of interactive, student-run activities that focused on teamwork, empathy, and what it means to be a good friend. From Friendship Freeze Dance to meaningful reflections and conversations, the Year 6 students did a fantastic job organising and creating activities that helped students feel included, valued, and seen.
Another standout moment was the Friendship Door Display Challenge, where each class creatively decorated their classroom door to reflect the theme of friendship. The results were both thoughtful and inspiring, and Mrs Sabri, Head of Primary Years, who had the difficult task of judging, was blown away by the effort and imagination on display.
Research reinforces the value of days like this, showing that when schools proactively foster friendships and positive peer relationships, it not only improves student wellbeing but also reduces social issues such as exclusion and bullying. When students feel connected and accepted, they are more likely to thrive, not only in the classroom but in life.
Thank you to all staff for your incredible support, flexibility, and creativity, and to our Year 6 students for their leadership and heart. Here's to many more successful Friendship Days ahead!

Why do students need to Practise Music? Dr Anita Collins
Practising allows the brain to process the huge amount of musical information needed to develop the skill required to play the instrument or sing. What the brain does through repetition is problem solve.

Opening round for Term 2 sports kicked off last week with our Rugby Focus Round having a huge turnout, with St Peters spirit at its finest. It was a shame the result wasn't what we wanted, but the boys put on a huge fight and showed what is to come in the following games. The pressure is on with this year's Chess team as they fight for a back-to-back premiership, with our youngest player in Year 8 showing good skills across the board. Although they couldn't grab a win this week, there is still hope with this very competitive team. Finally, our Firsts Football team with their amazing fight right until the end couldn't have been any better. After being two goals down with ten minutes remaining, our boys stood up and managed to pull back two goals, with one being in the last two minutes, drawing the game. A very good start for all the boys with their sport and we very much look forward for this week's Round 2 games.
