At just 19 years of age, Chris Bond OAM battled acute promyelocytic leukaemia. He survived, but lost his left hand, right fingers and legs below the knees to a combined bacterial infection. Chris has since gone on to become one of the best 3.5 Wheelchair Rugby players in the world.

On debut at the London 2021 Paralympic Games, Chris helped lead the Australian Wheelchair Rugby team, the Steelers, to their first Paralympic gold medal. He matched this effort in 2014 at the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Denmark, where the team won their first world title.

With Chris in their ranks, the Steelers managed a six-year reign at all major tournaments and are, again, going for gold at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympic Games. Chris has been working with schools and sporting organisations as the Partnership Manager for the Australian Sports Foundation for the last five years, but took 2020 off work to focus on his intensive training load in the leadup to the Paralympics, and to spend more time with his daughter, who was born in 2019.
