2018 Year 10 QDU Debating

In 2018, three Year 10 teams competed in the Queensland Debating Union competition. This age bracket provides a particular challenge for our students, as they miss the Year 9 competition due to Ironbark. Furthermore, many of our debaters only commenced this activity in Year 8. It is a true testament to the students’ abilities and dedication that they compete so well against their opposing schools, many of whom have far greater debating experience.

While each of our teams competed admirably, a special acknowledgement needs to be made to the 10.3 team consisting of Brad H, Zac H and Nathan J. These students not only made the finals – losing in a close debate to Brisbane Girls Grammar – but managed to do so with three regular members, as opposed to the usual four. This was made possible due to their commitment to both lunchtime and after-school training.

The invaluable support of Rae Morgan and Lauren Head through their coaching roles was certainly appreciated. A special thanks to Harry H (Year 7) for assisting as time-keeper with numerous 10.3 debates.

All students should be incredibly proud of their performances. They were excellent ambassadors for our College and displayed immense growth in their debating and public-speaking abilities.
